What Is Attacking Objectivism

Improved Essays
Attacking Objectivism Objectivism is the old values that have been around for thousands of years, while subjectivism is the rebel. Objectivism is based more on belief, whereas subjectivism is subject to our minds. Objectivism is the old beliefs of pursuing truth. Some of the main points of pursuing objectivism include: reality, reason, and self interest. Subjectivism is the view that reality, the object, is dependent on human consciousness, the subject. Objective values lie within religion, and tradition. In a modern society, we are evolving to become more subjective, and it is not necessarily a bad thing. Subjectivism says that our modern society creates the moral values which we rely on. Why would we follow the values set out so long

I agree with Howard Zinn’s viewpoint of objectivity and subjectivity in a way. In Zinn’s excerpt he proclaims how “One, that it’s not possible. Two, it's not desirable”. Zinn was talking about how If you were to take a history book of some sort and start putting certain facts into the book and big ideas it’s already subjective. For a history book, website or museum to be objective it would need to have every fact of every story from every angle of that event.…

    1) Zinn states many opinions within this article that show how he believes that racism is not natural, but historical. His definition of what contributed to racism was “the combination of inferior status and derogatory thoughts. (Zinn 24)” These contributions were often expressed when many colonies relied on slavery when product levels decreased. He also stated that “it was natural to consider imported blacks as slaves. (Zinn 25)”…

In February of 1776, the American Navy launched an offensive attack. Instead of attacking their fleet, they attacked the British supply on Nassau, in Bahamas. They snatched the main supply on the fort, and raised the flag of the American Revolution. This was significant because after being successful in Nassau, they repeated this, seizing other British supply. This affected the colonists because it weakened the British navy in the West Indies, and other British navies later on.…

Moral relativism- The idea of moral relativism is one that morality is relevant to your situation, and that you should be accepting other people's morals and cultures. Moral relativism can first be seen in the colonies, mainly by the quakers in pennsylvania, and quakers were also vehemently against slavery, which was another morally relativistic idea. Moral absolutism- The idea that there is a clear right and wrong and that right and wrong is the same for every situation, and the idea has had many impacts on historical events in us history.…

It is morally acceptable for one's self to believe that African Americans are inferior and that an Obama presidency will be disastrous for our country. Ethical Subjectivism claims that since there is no universal moral code or truths, people cannot be told that any of their morals is morally wrong or even right. If a person sincerely believes that it is right to burn a church down because the occupants are African American, according to ethical subjectivism no one can set up and say that is wrong as it can be wrong for one, but right to another. Forethermore, I may believe it is morally right to wear red and get intoxicated at a funeral, to others it may seem wrong. Without a universal truth, the people of the world abide either opinions implaced…

There is a nearly extreme difference between an objectivist and subjectivist definition of social problems. Objectivism is defining social conditions as true social problems through measurable characteristics, usually statistics. In contrast, subjectivism approach defines social problems in people’s individual perception of a condition as a social problem, coupled with ample evidence. In Gladwell’s reading, Making Road Dangers Invisible, NYC has been targeting drunk drivers by repossessing their automobile vehicles.…

In ‘The Subjectivity of Values’, J L Mackie examines error theory and objective morality vs non-cognitivism. Mackie’s report represents moral scepticism using moral error theory. By taking an error theory approach, Mackie confronts morality similarly to the manner in which an atheist confronts religion. Moral error theory could be broken down to a version of the Justified True Belief outline as follows: Moral claims are universally false There is reason to believe that moral claims are universally false There is no justification for believing any deniable claim…

Objectivity can successfully be attained when we filter out all of our feelings, biases, and emotions. Only then can something be true and relate to the reality of the world. However, the nature of being a human being is to have these varying sentiments about how we exist in this world and what we distinguish as good or bad. As individuals, we are all predisposed to some method of judgment through our social interactions and visually experiencing what is right and wrong just by living our lives in a community that uphold similar beliefs. This can be supported through the argument of relativity.…

These new concepts relate to previously defined concepts, but are created specifically by him to fit his new theoretical perspective. Bourdieu’s new concepts of objectivism and subjectivism relate to the previous concepts of structure and agency. It is with these new concepts that Bourdieu states that he believes there is a dialectical relationship between objectivism and subjectivism. He classifies his concepts of objectivists and subjectivists and states that one focuses on structures while ignoring agency, and the other focuses on agency while ignoring the structures within. He then sets out to prove that there is a dialectical relationship as a whole between the two, rather than the original notion of ignoring certain aspects of each.…

Ethical subjectivism is the idea that morality is not dependent on one’s culture; rather, that morality is just a matter of self interested power. For example, Ted Bundy, an American serial killer, was known to be charismatic, attractive and appealing to his victims. In an interview before his execution, Bundy stated that “[he] knew it was wrong to think about it, and certainly, to do it was wrong;” however, he proceeded to murder, decapitate and rape his victims. Bundy is a prime example of ethical subjectivism. How is it possible for a set of standards to be universal for all of man, if people who acknowledge and understand societal norms still decide to disobey them?…

In class and in The Elements of Moral Philosophy by James & Stuart Rachels, I learned about the Minimum Conception of Morality (MCM). There are two key elements which make up the Minimum Conception of Morality. The first part states the moral judgments must always have good reasons for the decision. This often is confused with what they feel and not actually facts. The second part is that morality must always be impartial, and take all stakeholders into consideration without being bias.…
