The role of the goddess Athena in The Odyssey, is to intervene when Odysseus needs help. Throughout part 2, Athena is Odysseus’ guiding light on the path to retrieving his family. “The goddess Athena appears and informs him [Odysseus] of the situation at home.” This quote is the first example in this part that shows Athena’s helping hand. As soon as Odysseus made it to Ithaca, Athena appeared to brief him on what he had missed while he was away. This shows true kindness between gods and mortals because it wasn’t necessary for her to do. Imagine being handed a box but not being allowed to open it. Or having the opportunity to challenge a god or goddess in which there would be great reward or great loss. What would you do in either instance? Comparing "Pandora" and "Athena," two stories from Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths, shows us how the gods gave mortals gifts or talents only to have them punished for their using them. Pandora simply wanted to open the box because she believed that the real object inside was what would bring her joy; just knowing what was in the box would relieve her constant urge to open the box.…

The article written by Michael Murrin addresses three aspects of Athena inhabits in The Odyssey. The main argument that would be focused in my paper is Athena serving as a “Military Goddess” with malice intentions towards the end of the novel. We do not see her real intention of her companionship with Odysseus until the scene where Odysseus finally comes home to Ithaca. Although she helps Odysseus get home to his wife (despite the stalling from other gods/goddesses), she wants Odysseus to kill everyone of the suitors. Athena also proves to have similar traits of Odysseus throughout the novel, of being sly and witty.…

The reader may notice that Athena uses an emotional appeal when telling about Odysseus and how her “‘heart breaks for Odysseus’”(1.57). Athena emphasizes how much Odysseus wants to go home and states that he “‘longs to die’”(1.71). This creates sympathy towards the audience and Zeus which proceeds to planning Odysseus’ journey home.…

Athena disguises so that way he is protected by the vengeful suitors (Homer, Book 8: 416-440). By disguising Odysseus, she is helping Odysseus to survive and complete his journey. Since the journey of Odysseus is what The Odyssey is about, and Athena’s action had a large impact on Odysseus, therefore she had such powers on the story. Lastly, Homer states “They would have killed the lot, and ended their hopes of returning home, if Athene, Zeus’ aegis-bearing daughter, had not shouted loudly, and restrained the combatants, crying: ‘Men of Ithaca, cease your fight, so that you may part without shedding each others’ blood. ’”(Book 24: 502-548).…

One of the major ways Athena helps Odysseus is when she warns him of his Supreme Ordeal; the final test that proves whether or not Odysseus has proved himself a hero and king. When Odysseus arrives in Ithaca the first person to greet him is Athena, with bad news that suitors have taken over his kingdom and have been using his wife, and queen of Ithaca (Penelope) to become king, by trying to persuade her into marriage. Homer writes in Part Two of “The Odyssey”, “ he arrives in Ithaca after an absence of twenty years. The goddess Athena appears and informs him of the situation at home. Athena [...]directs him…”…
