In Chapter Four of Holler If You Hear Me by Gregory Michie, the author describes how some of the other veteran teachers in his education classes expressed their views on the disconnect between education theory and classroom reality. One such example of this disconnect is the theory of differentiated instruction. I have learned a lot about differentiated instruction in my Foundations Block classes this semester, since I had not previously heard of the concept. In the video, Linda Hammond, stated students, “…need opportunities that are well-structured to allow them to learn those skills and to try different aspects of it.” This was very accurate. Data collected from the formative assessment showed several areas that students did not have critical background knowledge. Students need opportunities in which they will be able to practice the skills they are lacking. Results Overview The different types of data collected provided insight into the ten participants’ thoughts relative to their overall feelings about the instruction and revealed the effectiveness and impact of the instruction. The pre- and post-test provided the opportunity to compare the results between topic questions which the instruction readily addressed and others where there may have been some ambiguity. The results of the end of instruction questionnaire helped to clarify some of the ambiguity from the pre- and post-test comparisons, as there appeared to be some correlation of the pre- and post-test answers when compared to the end of instruction questionnaire. Shadow Study During the school day, teachers have to make quick decisions to adjust their lessons. The decision-making process is a special skill that teachers need in order to create a challenging and engaging lesson. With two months of exploring and practicing the Core Intervention Model at Ellwood Elementary School in the city of Goleta, CA, I (Xiaowei Qi, University of California Santa Barbara) participated in three sessions, tutoring kids in kindergarten and students in the second and fifth grade. My supervisors were Amanda Sweigart (the fifth grade), Samantha Farver (the second grade), and Judith Quintero (kindergarten). Regarding the journals about my experience as a tutor, among the three sessions, fifth graders learn independently, quietly, and quickly. It is a basic assumption of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) that the baccalaureate graduate is prepared to promote safe, quality patient care (AACN, 2008). My personal learning lens is very much influenced by the constructivism theory of learning, in particular Jerome Bruner’s theory. He posits that learners construct new ideas or concepts based upon existing knowledge.
