Many people often dream of reliving their most enjoyable moments from their past. In the “Great Gatsby,” Jay Gatsby possess obscene amounts of wealth and owns all the possessions a person could ever want. But what Gatsby really wants is to change the past. Gatsby desires to relive the past so he can be reunited with his love, Daisy, but unfortunately, this goal is impossible but Gatsby cannot recognize this and goes to great lengths to win Daisy back. An example of Gatsby’s unwillingness to believe the past is unchangeable occurs during a conversation between Nick. Nick says to Gatsby “you can’t repeat the past”(71) “Can’t repeat the past why of course you can “(71) replied Gatsby, The way Gatsby replies truly shows how much Gatsby believes …show more content…
The novel starts off with Nicks father giving Nick an important advice “ Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone he told just remember that all the people in the world haven’t had the same advantages as you’ve had”(1). Nick keeps this advice to heart and believes he still lives by this advice, expect he does not. There have been many times in the novel showing Nicks judgment against others, for example, Nick favors Gatsby and puts him on a much higher pedestal than any other character in the book. Nick says to Gatsby “you’re worth the whole damn bunch put together ”(118). But still, he claims not to judge, if Nick cannot reliably judge his own actions than this proves that Nicks is an unreliable narrator. Another example of Nick contradicting his own claim of not judging others is at Gatsby’s funeral he says “They were careless people Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money” (118). Even though this is true Nick once again does not withhold his judgment as he claims to show his bias towards Gatsby and his hatred toward the Buchanans. Another example of Nick being an unreliable narrator is him being drunk during two very important parts of the story. The first time Nick was intoxicated during the novel is at Myrtle's party. Nick says “ I have only been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon so everything that happens has a dim and hazy cast over it”(33). Nick using the word “Hazy” shows that Nick is not a reliable narrator since his memory of the event was not clear from the start nevermind after two years when he is remembering back to this event. Most people were not actually invited to the party in the first place as you see in the quote on page 41 "I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was one of the few guests who had actually been requested to attend the party. People were not invited they went there.” The narrator, or Nick Carraway in this case, speculates about how almost no one is actually invited to Gatsby’s superb parties they just show up because they think that if they show up they will seem high class because they are socializing with the élite citizens of New York City around the West Egg area. People go to these parties and act like they belong there because they feel like they have to in order to be or become classified as part of the elites. The book shows another example of this on page 43 where Lucille says, “I like to come; I never care what I do, so I always have a good time.…

In “the Great Gatsby” Gatsby’s past is a very important factor to who he is when the novel takes place. Revive the past is one of Gatsby's main motivations to make his fortune and be a successful man, he makes his fortune to relive the long lost love he had with daisy and buys a house right across from daisy and makes himself “famous” for his parties all for that love that he believes will come back. His persona itself is influenced by his past, we can also say that he has double standards in regards to the past, he didn't like his life as a poor boy and when he meets Dan Coby and becomes wealthy he hides his past, creating a whole new persona who was always rich and went to oxford etc, etc. However in regards to his past with Daisy he is…

Nick is an upstanding young man from a well to do Western family. Despite coming from a wealthy family, Nick was taught the value of reserving judgement at a young age by his father who said “Remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages you’ve had”(1). Nick took this advice to heart and managed to be a fairly accepting person and withheld judgement upon those people who didn 't have the same experiences and opportunities that he had. This treatment towards others allowed Nick to be friends with people as different from each other as Gatsby is from the Buchanans. Throughout the majority of the novel, Nick gives a fair unbiased eye to the people and events that he witnesses, however one of the last phrases he says to Gatsby is “Worth the whole damn bunch put together”(154).…

But he goes on further to say that he had “an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person”(2). Nick, throughout the novel, both heavily insulted and complimented Gatsby. We see through this that Nick always seemed to be unable to decide how he truly felt about Gatsby, and what he truly valued in life and in himself. Nick also stated, “Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men” (2).…
