Having Cried Wolf does a lot of work in only a short amount of space. Gretchen Shirm does so by taking on multiple characters’ stories, including different perspectives and interwoven storylines, all the while being chock full of vivid imagery and carefully crafted with literary techniques such as similes and metaphors. She also gives such specific, detailed, and relatable examples, appealing to multiple senses that make the reader feel almost as if they are actually there. For me, all of these techniques make the book more relatable, which in turn makes it come to life in a way. Similes are sprinkled throughout the book; some more poetic while others are simple and mundane comparisons, some that set the scene while others do a nice job of…

Imagery is the use of figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. In Maya Angelou’s selection from her memoir, Sister Flowers, Angelou uses imagery to help the readers paint and imagine a realistic picture in one’s mind. The author writes, “The sweet smell of vanilla had met us as she opened the door” (par. 29). This description of the fragrant vanilla scent allows the reader to experience the smell along with Marguerite. Angelou chooses to include descriptive words and phrases to emphasize the smell the reader is encountering.…

Erik Larson is argued to have a difficult time creating realistic details for a book about a time period he could only research about. In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson uses brilliantly constructed figurative language in order to insightfully display his interpretation of the story (entailing the events of the Chicago World Fair and the serial killer H. H. Holmes) and realistically and informatively describe the details of people, places, and events in the novel. The first figurative language tool that will be addressed is the simile. The first simile that is used to describe one of the main "characters" of Larson’s novel, Holmes, is “As he moved through the station, the glances of young women fell around him like wind-blown petals”…

For my first example of figurative language there is "He was a stocky man with big shoulders, the neck of a bull, thick lips, and curly hair"(Wiesel 47). This is a metaphor because it is helping it is saying that his neck is so big that it represents a bulls and it is not using like or as. It affects the reader because it helps them realize that he is a strong man and he was so big that his neck was as think and strong as a bull. The second figurative language is the "Who had a face not unlike the face of death"(Wiesel 51). This is a Hyperbole because it is an extreme exaggeration because he doesn't really have the face of death but they say that because he is so scary or intimidating.…

There is an abundance of figurative language in Night, written by Elie Wiesel. He uses a lot of very complicated figurative language to express certain images or feelings, often making his words like a puzzle that one needs to solve in order to understand its meaning. There are three particularly meaningful uses of figurative language throughout the novel, and that show Elie Wiesel’s creativity and amazing writing skill. The first use of figurative language that really stood out to me was when Elie Wiesel used a metaphor to compare the situation in which the Jews were to a sword hanging over their heads.…

Metaphor represents a relationship between two things suggested through an analogy. For example, the slogan advertised at the end of the COD: Black Ops commercial states, “There is a soldier in all of us”. The advertisers are not necessarily implying that there is an actual soldier inside of us, but rather they are implying that this video game is so much fun that everyone will become “hooked” on it once they play. “In metonymy, a relationship is suggested that is based on association, which implies the existence of codes in peoples minds that enable them to make the proper connections” (25).…

A metaphor usually connects two unlikely things. In the Literature text, even Aristotle considered a metaphor as “an intuitive perception of the similarity in dissimilars” (530). An example of one is while Bauby emphasizes his appreciation for his daughter and father, “These two are the outer links of the chain of love that surrounds and protects me” (41). The metaphor certainly reveals that he cares about his family and cherishes the moments he has with them. This metaphor tells readers that Bauby is family oriented.…

Metaphors are figures of speech that bring comparison or analogies between two things that are considered to lack similarity. It brings in the visual description of what is being described. For instance in Sylvia Path’s poem “Metaphors”, the writer brings out the visual description of a pregnant woman using an elephant. The size of a pregnant woman is huge hence the comparison with an elephant which is also huge though a woman and an elephant are different in many ways like an elephant is an animal with a trunk but a woman is a human being with no trunk. Susan Glaspell’s use of the word Trifles as a metaphor contributes to and illustrates theme, tone and characterization in the play in the approach described below.…

There are millions of informational bits within a grain of salt. Fortunately, there is no need to know everything.
