Americans’ Overdependence on Technology
In today’s society, technology seems to run the world. Many people use technology for work, leisure, and social media. Businessmen use computers for communication, writing reports, computing formulas, and making charts. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter consist of just some of the most popular mediums of social media. Teenagers frequently play video games and buy desired objects on the World Wide Web. Do Americans have an excessive dependence on technology? I believe that Americans have a strong reliance on technology because of several examples I have seen in my life from statistics. However, users can begin to obsess with social media, until checking their accounts integrates itself into the users’ lives. In fact, according to Jay Baer from convinceandconvert.com, 22% of Americans check their social media accounts several times a day. This urge to check their media accounts causes people to lose their focus on obligations and on their families. Instead of spending time connecting with their family, people spend time by themselves creating their own world on social media. Baer also states that 56% of Americans have a social media account. Having a social media account in itself does not mean that someone has an overdependence on technology, but obsessing with social media until it develops into a life style, demonstrates an unhealthy use of …show more content…
Microwave meals save time in a pinch, but some families depend too much on them. In fact according to foodmatters.tv, “Today, over 90% of homes in America use microwave ovens for re-heating foods, and for daily meal preparations.” This overdependence on microwaves can create problems for the family. During meal times, families should sit together and discuss their day. However, microwave meals have destroyed this precious family time. Instead of families spending time together, each person cooks his own food in the microwave when he wants to eat, and then eats alone. Also, girls will lack the skill of cooking if their mothers do not take the time to cook family meals and teach them the art of cooking. Do Americans have an overdependence on technology? I believe that we do. Technology can give people many blessings, however when we depend too much on it, it has the potential to create in people an overdependence on it and sometimes an addition for it. As the truism states, “Too much of one thing is bad thing,” and this truism applies to technology as well.
