A social worker is a professional who is dedicated to the quest of social justice and well-being of distressed individuals, and populations. In their obligation they use research, policy, community organizing, direct practice, crisis intervention, and teaching for the profit of those under social difficulties. The social work profession is an extensive profession that uses a variety of abilities and knowledge to do their work. Social workers are faced with many social and health problems. These are found in poverty, mental illness, child abuse and neglect, emotional instability, illness, economic uncertainty, domestic violence, homelessness, and drug abuse. These include: social case work, medical social work, military and veteran social work, administrative, management, community organization, social policy, and research. In these different settings you will find that a social worker’s job will vary. Some will provide direct support and counseling to those in need, emotionally stressed or that find themselves in difficult situations. Other social workers will clinically diagnose emotional, behavioral, and mental health disorders. Not only do they provide direct services, but will also provide referrals to seek available resources. A social worker’s job will also include advocating a change in policy, developing programs and resources. Social workers work and coordinate with the government, private, religious, business, and organizations to combat social problems through community awareness and programs …show more content…
The bachelor’s degree prepares social workers for generalist entry-level work. Graduate degrees consist of the Masters of Social Work and the Doctorate in Social Work or PhD. With a master’s degree you can offer therapy and perform advanced clinical practice. You can use a doctorate degree for research and teaching. Along with a degree from a university states require licensing, certification, or registration; this criteria differs according to state (Reamer). The NASW also provides additional credentials. These credentials are for those social workers who have attained competence and professionalism beyond their college degree and state license (NASW). The job outlook for social workers is expected to grow starting in 2012 through 2022. The growth expectancy is at nineteen percent higher than average for most occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Yet, this increase will contrast between specialties. Employment for child, family, and school social workers is projected to grow fifteen percent (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Health care social workers will grow twenty-seven percent.
