This island was under Spanish control until it eventually was divided in two. Half of the Island, the Dominican Republic was Spanish, while the other half, Haiti, was French. Under French rule Haiti became the world’s top sugar exporter and a breeding ground for African slaves. In fact, the island’s class system was made out of four different entities. These entities consisted of rich, white landowners, free people of color, poor whites and African slaves. This class system remained in place until tensions with France increased but at the end what ultimately brought down French colonial rule was the French Revolution. The constitution of 1805 states that there shall not be any defined religion, that no white person would carry the title of Master, slavery is abolished and that the country of Haiti would be independent from any other power. This new constitution was solely focused on Haiti’s development as a new nation. In fact, time and time again it is stated that Haiti would have the power to set up how government would function and to decide on property laws. This new constitution went against the French ways by stating that there would be no prominent religion.It is a constitution based on what the people want and a constitution in which the people make the decisions as opposed to having an outside force make the decisions for them. This constitution also focused on how Haitian citizens must act like in order to be considered “worthy” Haitians. For example, the constitution states “No person is worthy of being a Haitian who is not a good father, good son, a good husband, and especially a good soldier.” This shows that not only were the Haitians focused on new laws and government, they also focused on how their citizens.
