Personal Narrative: My First Online Class

Good Essays
As a student I have always tried to avoid public speaking courses as much as possible. Especially the ones that are for public speaking, once I found out I was going to have to take a public speaking course I was dreading the moment than I found out I could take it solely online and I thought oh this wont be as bad, even though I was still pretty anxious about it. Once in Com103 I was dreading having to say the first speech. Then we had our first online class, I felt a lot more prepared and had a better understanding of what was expected. Through com103 I was able to grow an understanding of how to prepare and organize a speech, I was able to decrease the anxiety I get before a speech, effectively listen and am now more prepared to talk and …show more content…
I really did not know how to set up a speech properly. It was great to learn how to use an outline to set up a speech and use it as a guide to state my points. Previously when I spoke I would try and memorize every single thing I wanted to say which ended up setting me up for failure. The first speech in this class I ended up trying to memorize exactly what I wanted to say after I had written it all out. I then ended up reading directly off my paper, which wasn’t what I wanted to accomplish. With my next speech I learned from the collab session and text that it was a lot more beneficial to create an outline. From creating an outline I felt more prepared to do the speech. Once, I did my second speech I really wasn’t as scatter brained as the previous one and was able to go through each point with ease thanks to the outline. The outline also made it easier to set up my points in the order necessary for the speech. Which is another thing I learned from this class. There are many different ways to set up a speech according to the topic at hand like chronological, sequential, etc. learning this made it easier to pick one and create an outline off the order I would …show more content…
At my current job I feel I will be able to prepare more for things like back to school and open house where I have to talk to parents in my class. I also feel like once I become a nurse it will help me communicate better with patients having public speaking is great for all forms of communication. It not only taught me how to relax during a speech but it taught me how to effectively listen as well. I now feel that I am a lot more prepared to communicate with people. Through com103 I was able to grow an understanding of how to prepare and organize a speech, I was able to decrease the anxiety I get before a speech, effectively listen, and am now more prepared to talk and communicate with people in the future. I am very glad that I took this class and am less fearful of taking future communication

Also, I am going to try to not add as many words onto my outline. I feel that if I can be able to step away from my outline more and read from it less, it will help me it move around and feel more confortable being in front of the class. I believe that I know almost all of the information I am presenting but use the outline as a safety net, and use it too much. Another item I need to work on is using my visual aid. This was the first time I had used a visual aid for a speech in college and I did not do my best.…

I also began to wonder how my paper could vary from one specific audience to another. After I identified who I wanted to write to, the rest of my writing followed. I tried to mold my ideas into a paper that would best speak to my intended audience. Even though audience and purpose might have come easier in my argument essay, not all essays were like that. I didn 't think about my audience in my analysis or contemplate my purpose with my in class essay, but now I know that I must always do that for every…

When it comes to writing I am too hard on myself. I can finish writing a whole paragraph or two, only to press the backspace bar and delete my work. When it came to writing my first essay I did not turn it in on time because I was not confident in my writing. In the first essay, I had to analyze every question I was asking myself. It was easy for me to answer the question, but hard for me to actually go more into detail about the answer I had given.…

English 101 taught me how to be more creative and broad about writing. Example on Essay 1 I didn’t really mention anything about Sonia Sotomayor’s mother not wanting her to work, and behind that was facts and important information about he context that I missed. I also approach my assignments differently now; I make sure my paragraphs are structured in the write order for an easy read for the reader. I realized when I start off with a good approach on a topic I have to tools and skills learned in class to expand ideas and write a solid piece of writing to read. I did also realize that I am bad to start off with, I haven’t seemed to find that spark to start me off right, so I guess that’s why they call it a shitty first…

So I planned and carefully went through each step ensuring that I was following all guidelines. I know one of the problems I had the first time around was not getting to the point and being wordy as well as a few grammar issues which I wanted to make sure I took note of in essay two. I revised myself as well as used grammarly to help me with my problem areas. However after hearing feedback about my essay I was a bit uneasy because the changes I made due to grammarly contributed to my essay not maintaining balance and objective tone. This was a major let down because I felt without using the program I was able to have well organized paragraphs with good topic sentences but failed to do so on the next…

    EWRT 200 Reflective Essay

Why do we have to write an essay?” However, when I went up to EWRT 211, some other profound questions came up with my mind, which were “How to make connection with the given idea and my idea? How to make a more strong detail?”, rather than those above questions that I though, when I was EWRT 200. For non-native speaker, it was really difficult to think a certain idea because we do need to care many things like structure, grammar, and flaw. Honestly, I am afraid of harsh comments or lower grades on my essays from my instructor even though…

I used them to make my point instead of support to my point. After speaking with you about my Writing Project 2 rough draft I set to work and reworked some of the stories I included, which I was too attached to at the time to completely remove. I added more of my thoughts and opinions and tried to write with a little less intention of pulling at the heartstrings of the reader. Slowly throughout the semester I successfully weaned myself off of them completely. Not to say that I will not use them in the future, but for this semester I wanted to gain more writing experience without what was already a strong point of mine in order to sharpen my other skills.…

I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…

Essentially, an idea map or an idea list are two common ways to go about brainstorming. These can keep thoughts, ideas, and initially set the structure for the essay. I found that creating an idea list helped me the most when planning my essay. Before I started doing this I would write, but not with the idea of where I would go with the essay. After figuring out that brainstorming benefited me greatly, doing it again was not a question.…
