What is a Psychiatric Technician
It has taken me many years to decide what I wanted to do for a living, but I made the decision a couple years ago. I want to be a Psychiatric Technician because of many reasons but mainly because I enjoy caring for people and bringing joy to their lives.
I decided to write my research paper on “What is a Psychiatric Technician because this field is not known by much of the nursing population. I also want to make sure I have chosen the right career for me because it will affect not only me but my husband and children. I know there will be many positive and negative aspects of being a psych tech but that comes with all nursing careers. There will be long hours and crazy shifts. I know this because I currently work at a behavioral health residential

I asked her what her reasons for choosing this career path and her response was “Because I was working at a long term care mental health facility and I enjoyed working with the residents. Until that point I had never heard of a psychiatric technician. I figured I could make some good money and do what I like doing.” I also asked her the steps she took to get the education she needed, she responded by saying “I filled out an application at the college and got on the waiting list. It was 4 full semesters and 1 summer semester.” I ended the short interview by asking what she thought were 3 pros and 3 cons to being a psych tech and she said “For the pros 1. It is very interesting regardless of the direction you go in, 2. The money is pretty good, 3. There are multiple directions you can take with it. Her cons were 1. Most people don’t know what a psych tech is, 2. Not everyone recognizes it as a licensed nurse, and 3. There are limitations compared to an LVN
