I remember in kindergarten when I was five years old. My teacher Ms. House gave me a piece of paper with pictures that we were to fold into quarters and cut out. Then we have to glue them to the word that they match. We were each given a pair of children’s scissors that barely work. Unfortunately for me, a left-hander the scissors were made for right-handed kids. I spent a long time trying to cut my paper without making a dent. I told Ms. House in charge that I couldn’t do it. “You’re just not trying hard enough,” she replied. I still remember that until this day. At the time I didn’t realize that little incident was the introduction to a lifetime of misusing things like can-openers, ring-binders, and even …show more content…
Before looking for any definitive solutions, I had to recognize – what percentage of the population is left-exceeded? A lifetime of being left-handed, I have known that there was a small amount of people left-handed people world. According to Olson Left-handed people make up about 10 percent of the world’s population (Olson). Scientists aren 't sure why some people turn out to be left-handed. Scientist have noticed that being left-handed runs in families. Although going back in my family history I have not found another lefty. So scientists are pretty sure your genes (DNA) influence whether or not you turn out a lefty. For example, the right hemisphere controls movements on the left half of the body, which includes the left hand. The left hemisphere controls movements on the right side (Dowshen). Lefties tend to be holistic thinkers, creative, daydreams and more visual thinkers than righties. Righties tend to be linear thinkers and are good in language, logic, writing, math, and science(Olson). As for me I am a visual thinker and learn best by use of pictures, diagrams, and …show more content…
My research started with the subject of genetics qualities. In particular, is hand controlled by a gene or by the environment? I was raised by right-handed guardians, encompassed by right-handed ¬¬-kin, taught by right-handed educators, in a right-handed society. My decision is that handedness can 't be resolved exclusively by the environment. To better comprehend the heritability of hand preference, I took my exploration to the online databases found on the GSU Library site. During my search on left-handedness and genetics qualities theories, I went over a study directed by Willems, Roel M. this book focused that a gene for handedness might have described how left-handers can also form an important element of genetics research into the molecular mechanisms of asymmetrical brain development; we propose that molecular studies of left-handedness hold great potential for identifying genes that are important for cerebral lateralization. It will be particularly promising to identify large extended families with an increased rate of left-handedness across various branches of the family tree because such families may reveal genetic sub-forms of this trait and this may lead to the identification of crucial molecular networks and pathways in cerebral lateralization. As we enter the era of personal genome sequencing, we have an unprecedented opportunity to decode the genetic underpinnings of traits that are
