Parents began to go into cohabitation instead of marriage itself. Cohabitation has no legal benefits like marriage, such as health care, death benefits or pensions. It also doesn’t have the costly, and time consuming separation process called divorce; in a cohabitating household, members are free to leave at any time. “Marriage is a way of restricting the freedom of people so that investing emotionally and financially in the union makes sense” says James Q. Wilson, author of “Cohabitation Instead of Marriage” (Wilson). Cohabitation doesn’t last very long, an average span per couple is about two years, with scholars regarding it as substitute to being single, not to being married. “Children of Gay Fathers” written by Robert L, Barrett and Bryan E. Robinson gives insight on a study in the 1980’s which showed how homosexual parenting has grown with in the United States and how it affects children. “The children of the fathers are like children from all families some academically talented, some struggle to get through school, some are model students and some are constantly in trouble. Barret)” there were legitimate concerns about the impact living with a gay father in the household, including developmental regarding to the child 's mental state and if the child would feel if they were “catching the gay” from their father. Fathers first concern was that there will being and healthy adjustment of the child that 's her in that most of the time that the parent had divorced from the mother is now coming up to the child there were significant trauma already in place from seeing the termination of the marriage. Barret) When looked at the parenting styles of gay fathers it wasn’t markedly different from those of other single fathers except gay fathers try to create more stable home environment and more positive relationships with her children than traditional heterosexual parents.
