In The Crucible, Abigail’s character is characterized as an evil, vengeful, selfish, manipulative, and a magnificent liar. The author portrays Abigail’s actions as a defence mechanism to save herself and receive what she demands. Abigail’s actions in the play are based around her protecting herself from being hanged, and her attempts to separate John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor. From the general characteristics that is found in the play, it appears as people are bad because of no morals and selfish survival instincts. Also, people become bad because of their past mistreatments by others, such as when the proctors removed Abigail from their home. In the crucible Thomas Putnam starts to accuse random people, which leads to a bigger chain or false accusations, his benefits from the accusation are selfish because he would gain his neighbor 's land.Like in The Crucible, Abigail saw her parents getting killed which turned her into a deceiving, manipulative person that caused great disruption to her society. Abigail 's trauma as a child corrupted her innocent nature. Abigail justifies her actions through lies that she cast to herself and others “She is blackening my name in the village!
