They let their fleshly desires take over and didn’t think about what they had been taught. Throughout our lives, we will be in many different relationships, and it is so important to treat those relationships the way God wants us to. The relationship we have with our parents is a very important one. “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12) In Matthew, Jesus tells us to love Him above everything else, but secondly we are supposed to love our neighbor. Our neighbor is anyone and everyone that we may come in contact with. We know all these truths in our heads, but just like the Romans we don’t put them into practice. It’s selfishness that keeps us from having right relationships with people. We tend to think that we are better than someone else, but in God’s eyes we are all the same and none of us are righteous. The Romans turned to idolatry and left God behind. They turned into lustful, wicked, covetous people who only thought only about themselves. (Romans 1:25-31) They knew that the judgment of God would come upon them, but they didn’t seem to care and even encouraged others to join them in their heinous acts. As time goes on, cultures change and people change, but God never changes. He is the God of all people. “Is He the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the gentiles? Yes, or the Gentiles also. (Romans 3: 29) In God’s eyes, we are all the same and one culture is not superior over another. It is the sin nature of people that cause a culture to move away from God. As Christians, we are supposed to live a life set apart from the world. We live in the world, but we should not be of the world. America was founded on Christian principles, but because of the influence of other cultures and the changing of our own culture America doesn’t have the same values that it once had.
