Analytical Essay: Who/what influenced Macbeth to murder Duncan?
In William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, the Scottish general kills the king of Scotland and takes the throne for himself. Many different factors may have made him make this decision, but three of the main influences are the Witches at the beginning of the play who tell him he is to be the King of Scotland. This sets up for the second influence of his own ambition that becomes stronger after hearing from the Witches. The third was possibly his wife, Lady Macbeth. She was the one who truly wanted Macbeth to go through with the murder and was a very influential character in the play. Obviously, as a brave general, Macbeth would have had this in the back of his head most of the time so when someone else thought likewise, his ambitions grew stronger. This backup came from the three evil Witches who featured throughout the play. Macbeth meets them as they start hailing him the King of Scotland. ‘All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!’ At first he is confused, but eventually Banquo starts to support the idea as it starts to creep into Macbeth’s deepest thoughts. His ambitions slowly grow until he realises that maybe he should just kill the king. The Witches are seen as the characters that start the whole tragedy and are responsible for all of the misfortune that follows. Once she hears the news about her husband, she instantly decides to support the prophecies made by the Witches. She loved the sound of becoming the Queen but she is worried that Macbeth cannot see what has to be done and that he might pass up the opportunity to take the throne of Scotland. She is worried that he is too ‘soft’ and is too ‘kind’ to fulfill such a task and must try to persuade him. At first, Macbeth is unsure about the whole situation. He doesn’t know if he really wants to be king at all, let alone murder the current one. Lady Macbeth’s conversation with him finally convinces him as he feels like his wife won’t see him as a ‘real man’ if he doesn’t go through with it as she questions his manhood. ‘Yet do I fear thy nature. It is too full of human kindness...’ is one of her quotes from the play describing that she thinks he is not ‘tough’ enough.
