“We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” (Barbara Jordan) The world would be a dull place if everyone were the same. Differences are important in the world and they should be respected. In fact, people shouldn’t be judged or discriminated because of their differences or the way they act for certain things. All around the world people get judged for being different from others and people must be willing to accept the people. In the stories, “What of This Goldfish Would you wish”, “American Flag Stands for Tolerance” and “NFL National Anthem article” all express how differences are important and should be respected throughout the world. The short story “What of This Goldfish Would You Wish?” is a poignant story written by Etgar Keret. Yonatan travels to different places asking the same questions to see the diversity of answers. As Yoni went from house to house he kept getting different responses to the question. First, an old lady “asked simply for a child.” (Etgar Keret) Second, a holocaust survivor asked “would if be possible for all the …show more content…
Allen states that a person has a right to burn the American flag. In fact, people should not be called out on for doing something they believe is right. People should be able to do what they want to do and not get judged or penalized, “the leadership of the People’s Republic of China decided that citizens who peacefully express disagreement with government policies may be slaughtered.” (Ronald J. Allen) In this case, people are not being able to express how they feel or disagree with the government because they will be slaughtered. There may be other ways to look at it but “the flag stands for free expression of ideas, no matter how distasteful.” (Ronald J. Allen) All in all, people should be allowed to express themselves in any way they want and not get accused of doing wrong because everyone is

The flag is held sacred by millions of Americans. The First Amendment does not annul 48 states statutes and an Act of Congress banning flag burning. Flag burning is not a crucial part of expressing any ideas. Johnson could have disavowed the flag or burned it in private. Johnson was able to shout, “Ronald Reagan, killer of the hour, perfect example of U.S. power,” and “red white and blue we spit on you…”…

During the Republican national convention was taking place in Dallas in 1984 where Gregory Lee Johnston participated in a political demonstration of which an american flag was burned as a sign of symbolic language. He was then charged on a Texas criminal statute that forbids the desecration of venerated objects that included but not excluded to monuments, places of worship or burial, or a state or national flag “in a way that would offend one or more persons likely to observe or discover his action”. This lead to him being convicted and sentenced to a year's time in prison along with a fine of two thousand dollars. However, this was not the ned as he appealed this case to the supreme court as he felt that it was well with his rights to burn a flag as the first amendment protects him.…

Based on “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, “American Flag Stands for Tolerance”, and my own experiences, our relationships with others define who we are by revealing of our actions. Etgar Keret, author of “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, wrote about Yoni, a young man, making a documentary, knocking on people’s doors asking what they would wish for if they had three wishes. “Hard like that - rapping at his door. Just the way Sergei doesn’t like” (5). As Yoni goes around knocking on people’s doors, he raps at Sergei’s, a russian man, in a way Sergei does not like, disrespecting Sergei’s space.…

Some people would say that it would be a bad thing to treat the flag with disrespect and others would agree but not agree. This is all because of Johnson that burnt the United States flag in the state of Texas in a public place. I agree, that it was wrong for Johnson to burn the flag because it is the flag that symbolizes unity and freedom and to do that to it. It was also wrong because it was in a public place. But if some people would agree with Johnson because they believe that it was his freedom of speech.…

Sometimes people are unable to accept others, because they are fearful. Sergei does not treat Yonatan with respect. He automatically assumes that he is up to no good and is a bad person. In the story “What, of This Goldfish Would You Wish,” the author says, “In this instant Sergei understands the boy did not come for television, what he came for, specifically, is to snatch Sergei’s fish.” This shows that Sergei does not accept people, no matter who they are.…

The First Amendment should not defend flag desecration because the flag is venerated. Also burning a flag is an action of behavior not an act of speech. Since most disapprove of flag burning, the government should have a right to ban it (Whitman). While using flag-burning as a way to express anger towards the government, it is very controversial whether it is right or wrong. Some may believe that the First amendment should protect this action, however some believe that the burning the flag should be handled differently and not protected because it is offensive.…

Many people in today's world are burning the American flag in public. This should not be allowed because it is a disgrace to the people who fought for this country, and to the people in the United States. People that burn the flag don't realize how much hurt they are causing the Americans and how bad it makes us look. Some people might argue that burning the American flag is ok and that it doesn't effect anybody.…

“It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences,” said Audre Lorde, a Caribbean-American writer, and civil rights activist. In this quote she is saying that if we just agreed that we are different, and we won’t alway get along, then the world would be a more peaceful place. Even in today’s society people are pulled apart from others because of their differences. Even so the society today is better than it was during times like America in the 1930’s, on the Indian reservations, and in Europe between Jews and Christians.…

The burning of the American flag is one of the biggest controversies that has been going on for years, whether it's an act of defiance and rebellion or if it's your right as freedom of speech. There has been multiple events where the act of burning of the flag has been involved and riots and violent outbursts followed soon after. In 1989 there was a case which ruled it as apart of the first amendment, granting it as your freedom of speech. This lead half of America in an uproar because they believed the burning of the American flag is disrespectful to everyone who has fought for the freedom that they have today. Their argument is that it may be your freedom of speech, but people died to give you that freedom.…

It is an argument that makes out the flag to be more than just a piece of fabric, and ties it to many American values, ultimately coming to the conclusion that burning it is like setting fire to all the soldiers who fought for the flag and everyone else who lives in the country. Additionally, and more importantly to the argument of free speech, proponents of flag burning punishment say that there should be limits to free speech, often citing that it is illegal to shout fire in a crowded theatre for fun. Both of these arguments do revolve around the idea of putting certain ideas, such as the flag or national anthem, on a pedestal that should be untouchable from freedom of speech, in order to preserve patriotism and respect. From this perspective, flag burners are seen as people who are taking what they have for granted, and not considering how appreciable the country of America is in comparison to others. The argument is simply a different interpretation of the same idea brought up by protectors of flag burning: America’s greatness.…

At time it can be very hard to do this and sometimes we don't even realize what we are doing to the person's feelings. For the other person this can be very hard on them. We need to take the time before we say something to think about whether or not it is going to crush this person.…

Tolerance is a concept that permeates through our everyday lives and we find ourselves presented with situations where understanding is a key aspect we must employ. In the words of the great Dalai Lama, “In the practice of tolerance, one’s enemy is the best teacher”. This is an incredibly strong moral that guides us and expresses that in the face of conflict, facing our enemy is the best way in learning how to be accepting. This notion of tolerance is exemplified predominately through the themes of racism, and good and evil in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), Boaz Yakin’s Remember the Titans (2000), and Tate Taylor’s The Help (2011).…
