The first reason, they were the main influence for Lincoln to push to end slavery at the end of the Civil War. The Radical Republicans affected American society and culture because Lincoln’s goal wasn’t to end slavery when the war was finished, it was to preserve the Union. The Radical Republicans helped the end of slavery come quicker because if they hadn’t pushed for an end to slavery at the end of the war, it could’ve lasted until today, or it could’ve lasted a few years after the war because of a rising support of the abolitionist movement. …show more content…
They rejected Lincoln’s Ten Percent plan and created their own. The Ten Percent plan required only ten percent of the white male population in the state to agree with rejoining the Union. The plan the Radical Republicans created is called the Wade-Davis Bill. Lincoln vetoed the Wade-Davis Bill because he thought it was to harsh on the Southern population. The Radical Republicans were so harsh on the South because of the Union losses that could’ve easily been avoided had they not seceded. Another reason was the 350,000 Union casualties in the war.
