In today’s world it takes a lot to get people’s attention. Multiple things like cell phones, advertisements, and other people compete to get someone 's attention. It’s hard to get people’s attention, but it is even harder to hold their attention and keep them interested. Carnivalesque antics are used in protest to hold the attention passersby by doing activities that are not seen everyday on the street. The suffragist and American Labor Movement used the carnivalesque tactic of pagents to protest. Some theater companies, such as The San Francisco Mime Troupe and the Bread and Puppet Theater put on plays to protest and get their ideas across. Reclaim the Streets is an organization that started in order to protest the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act in 1994 in England. The act classifies civil protest and parties as criminal acts. By participating in carnivalesque style protest, people have fun while supporting something they believe in. Also, this style of protest attracts others. It is very easy for people to drive by a huge street party, see what’s going on, park their car, and join in. One disadvantage of carnivalesque protest could be lack of passion. People could be attending the protests just for fun and not know or care why the protest was occurring. It is an issue when people don’t know what they are protesting.
