An Open Letter to all the Superheroes.
Effective leadership is nuanced. It’s ambiguous. It takes the most precise amounts of pride and humility, confidence and skepticism... It’s no wonder the bookstores and consulting firms thrive covering the topic. It also takes an incredible amount of hard work and sleepless nights. However, the rewards are priceless and here’s my journey discovering that.
To explain what I’ve learned about effective leadership, allow me to introduce my super power. Yes, it often makes me seem slightly odd, but when it comes to executing leadership, it has been invaluable. Nevertheless, my superpower has helped me successfully organize large events like the local science fair and annual summer camps. I’m not saying they were perfectly organized, but for someone with weeks of laundry piled in her closet, they’re pretty impressive. These events also confirmed for me that behind every great leader is an even greater team – and there is no way I could accomplish these events without an effective team.
Finally, I’m dictionary-definition introverted, but my superpower regularly pushes me into partially crazy yet awesome situations like pitching for a TEDx conference in front of 100 people or teaching a group of underprivileged kids about entrepreneurship for a week. Talk about being outside of my comfort zone! Having these experiences have helped me identify in my leadership positions with those on my teams who have similar fears.
