What I Ve Learned In English Class

Most students have problems with mathematics, but for me, English has always proven to be a worthy foe. Therefore, I understood that going into English 1113 early might jeopardize my perfect grade point average. I spent a lot of time considering whether to jump right in to English 1113 or take another year of high school English. Fortunately, I decided to challenge myself. One mechanic I was especially concerned for was commas. Commas have always been troublesome, but after this class, I noticed tremendous growth in my understanding and usage of commas. Although many students believe they possess outstanding punctuation, I understood my comma usage was subpar, which assisted in the belief that I would struggle through this class. I always struggled with English, and I assumed this class would be the same because of the worrisome fables told by the students already enrolled. However, after I received my first essay grade, I saw no errors in my understanding of writing and formatting a …show more content…
During the next few weeks, the class worked on multiple comma assignments handed out by Mrs. Fleming because I was not the only one struggling. After a few unsatisfactory comma grades, I took it upon myself to personally ask Mrs. Fleming each time a comma related question. This allowed me to see the mistakes I was making when writing, and Mrs. Fleming was personally able to assist in the correction of my mistakes. From then on out, I spent the majority of my time revising my paper specifically searching for careless comma mistakes. The time I spent searching for comma errors paid off because I reduced the number of comma errors on my second paper to only one (“Benefits of Volunteering”). Although one or two errors is not perfect, it is expected on a rough draft. This led me to believe that over the past twelve weeks, I had become a more proficient and efficient

Rivers of Rhetoric I can feel the eyes of my peers on my neck and my cheeks are burning bright red. The buzzing from the fluorescent lights fog my thoughts as I squirm in my seat, not used to being confined to a typical elementary school desk. I can’t stop getting chills, not because of the incoming blast of fog chilled north coast air, but because I’m nervous of what Ms. Morton will say. Her lips are pursed as she looks my scrawny sixth grade self up and down before she blithely asks, “what is a comma anyway?” I pause, look up, and say “I don’t know,” but here’s the thing: I didn 't need to yet.…

I have learned so much in English 1011, but there are three things I feel are the most important. I feel like that most important things I have learned are the importance of being present in class, how to write a research paper, and the importance of using a comma properly . One of the most important things I have learned in this class is being present in class is very important and can be critical in passing a class. In college classes it isn't like high school where if you show up and have missed a couple days you can catch up easily and turn in things late.…

At the beginning of learning English I had problems writing, I was so confused with the grammar, unity and punctuation. Before this course I didn't know how to place a comma or a semicolon in place, not only that but I only knew a little of subject and verb agreement. After practicing and a lot of interactive exercises, now I'm able to identify those grammar problems on my writing and fix them. Something else that I learned was about modified sentences, after learning about this, I have been able to write more clearly.…

This class has been one of the most interesting, uplifting, and fun courses I have ever taken. Coming into this class I was unsure of myself due to the fact that I had taken English 101 in high school as a dual enrollment course and didn’t feel that it was up to the level and what an actual course would have been. Not only did I believe we would be graded far harder, but I thought we would be forced to write far differently from any of the assignments we were exposed to in English 101. After my time in English 102 with you, my expectations have been greatly exceeded. Not only did I excel both my writing and public speaking skills through the rhetorical analysis, controversy analysis, and public argument, but I was able to be taught…

Out of the many lessons I learned in this course I enjoyed learning the aims of writing, expressive aim, referential aim, persuasive aim, and literary aim. Although my writing experience in the military was writing papers in referential aim and persuasive aim, the reason I choose the three essays below is because they were written in expressive aim. While I was making corrections and editing these three essays, I noticed that there was one common mistake not only in these three essays, but in all of the essays written during this course. The mistake of the improper use of punctuation more specifically comma usage. Even though comma usage is a basic lesson that I should have learned in middle school and mastered in high school, I continue to struggle with the proper use of…

The journey of Composition 1, for myself, was a long, vigorous one, but ultimately it has become very rewarding to me as a writer. Entering Composition 1, I honestly thought my ability as a writer would carry me through the class, with little to no effort involved. Through the many assignments, the grades fluctuated from 100s to failing and every grade letter in between. My laziness began to show when my work started to receive average grades, due to simple errors. This even carried over to the latest paper, with a combined six comma splices and fused sentences (Johnson).…

But, I believe that after these four papers I have greatly improved my proof reading skills. I used to think that all I had to do to proof read my paper was to read it one time through. I have learned that to accurately proofread my paper I should read it several time and also allow a peer to read it to see things that I didn’t.…

Through my first year of the college experience I have learned a lot of very different things, having to do with the so called “adult world”. I have found many of these new facts interesting but not very relevant to school. What I did learn this year was many things about school itself, as well as how different it is in comparison to high school. I guess if there is one thing that I would like for you to know, it would be that I would really love to master grammar skills.
