Reflection On The Smarter Measure

Improved Essays
This class has taught me many things but the most important part of it was taking this Smarter Measure assignment the results brought so many things to life and I realized what I needed to fix in my learning side of things and where I can be better at. And I feel like I scored pretty fair on the life factors I felt like I did pretty good but there were some bad thing in there that I still really need to work on to better myself not only as a learner but just as a person as well. There is a quote from the book on page 312 "A reinforcement is a form of learning is a consequence that increases the probability that a behavior will occur." This was a very big quote that I took out of the whole semester only because I completely agree with it and honestly I feel like the scores on the smarter Measure would have been so much better had I had a reward or something waiting for me at the end. Things are very powerful to people now a days we can’t …show more content…
One last quote from the text that really help me see the difference in learning was on page 177, it states, "The ability to think critically and to make effective life decisions is shaped by many factors, including our stage of cognitive development, the possession of good analytical communication, and research skills and such characteristics as open-mindedness, flexibility, and creativity." This one was a little long but it made a great point of view on critical thinking and how best to use it I know I struggle when I am doing any school work and it’s something that I really need to start working on but this was all about decisions and how they are shaped by critical thinking. And that really stuck out to me because not only does your mind control your decisions but also your behavior this was my favorite leaning theory because it has the ability to control almost anything it

Reinforcement theory discusses how an individual’s learning depends on the consequences tied to the behavior. In general there are two types of reinforcement: positive and negative. Positive reinforcement results when a behavioral consequence has strengthens the probability of the behavior being repeated; while negative reinforcement results when an undesirable consequence is withheld, strengthening the probability of the behavior being repeated. Negative reinforcement is often confused with punishment, but they are not the same.…

I never thought that reading a book on reinforcement would be so handy. “Don’t Shoot The Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training” by Karen Pryor was the book that opened my eyes to new was of reinforcement. I in no way truly understood what reinforcement was and how powerful it truly is. The book had six rather lengthy chapters “Reinforcement: better than rewards”, “Shaping: developing super performance without strain or pain”, “Stimulus control: cooperation without coercion”, “Untraining: Using reinforcement to get rid of behavior you don’t want”, and “Reinforcement in the real world”, “Clicker Training: A new technology”.…

    Fixed And Growth Mindset

In GPS 1010, I have learned that a person’s mindset is established in (1) a particular way of thinking; or (2) a person’s attitude and set of opinions about something. In addition to these items, one can either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. These mindsets play a huge role in one’s success or failure. The mindset has “two meanings to ability, not one: a fixed ability that needs to be proven and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning” and repetition. To sum up, “the fixed mindset makes you concerned with how you’ll be judged; the growth mindset makes you concerned with improving.”…

Throughout my academic experiences, I have found that a majority of my instructors had not directly influenced my success in their respective courses. They had simply assigned coursework and expected students to be prosperous without much guidance. Conversely, on one of my college professors, Dr. Carlos Blanco has directly influenced my success in English 101. Albeit, Dr. Blanco may give off a rather intimidating impression, his intentions are to educate and sophisticate, in addition to guiding his students to a successful route. With the goal of assisting his students achieve success in the course, Dr. Blanco provides his students with reading selections of varying themes, some of which are controversial in nature.…

Studying has caused my grades and happiness to go up which eventually turned studying into an automatic reinforcer that no longer needs social reinforcement. I still intermittently reinforce my behaviors by allowing myself break time, however I no longer need to implement punishment. I hope to fully get rid of the reinforcement by the end of the semester. The project taught me how to select an objective behavior and modify that behavior by using operational conditioning. I understand how to operationally define, record, and reinforce the behavior.…

In one of my cited text it states, “Most college faculty don’t realize that they lack a substantive concept of critical thinking, they believe that they sufficiently understand critical thinking, and assume they are already teaching students it.” Because of this, we as the students often find ourselves in a lecture, writing for memorization, and (largely ineffective) short-term study habits are still the norm in college instruction and teaching today. With this in mind, the students can engage in what they are learning but they are often unfathomable because of this scholars are fixed to grasp similar situations instead of more complex ones. Also in one of my cited text it states,”Critical thinking is the art of thinking about thinking with a view to improving it. Critical thinkers seek to improve thinking, in three interrelated phases.…

. As I think about the different cognitive strategies such as Bloom’s Taxonomy, Perry’s Scheme and SOLO, I have come to realize that (Perry’s Scheme) is the strategy that promotes critical thinking in a greater aspect in a college student. A great example of this, in my opinion, is looking back at my own personal college experience and seeing how such has been transitioning through the different cycles of this particular strategy. Before I move on into explaining of how my own personal college experience can be analyzed through Perry’s Scheme, I think it is important to state each aspect of the strategy and what each one indicates.…

As we moved into adulthood some topics became more relatable, while others started to really get me thinking about my future and what to except. Of these topics I want to touch on college, adult drug use, and divorce and remarriage. I really enjoyed how the book talked about the effects of college, probably because it is really relevant to me currently, but also because I do not think I ever realized so much went into tertiary education. To being with, the topic of massification was very interesting to me to begin with. This term meaning that college could benefit almost everyone.…

I am good at looking at others work and project and “poking holes” but I need to work more on looking at my own work/thoughts more critically and make sure my understanding is correct and holistic. Even though I know my way isn’t the only way or even the best way, I need to continue to be open minded and consider a variety of different options (aka school of thoughts). 2. After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…
