The challenge was me being a freshman and getting adjusted to the college lifestyle. By college lifestyle I mean getting used to the different courses and professors. My first few weeks here at Cleveland State as a freshman was simply the worst. I was so lost and overwhelmed with the syllabus and the amount of work load I would later face. I was starting to doubt myself and my abilities of actually completing school and obtaining a degree. I started to believe that college was something that was not for me. I heard stories all the time about people telling others that “College wasn’t for everybody”, and here I was starting to …show more content…

I learned how to become more organized. While, I also learned how to manage my time. One thing I learned was that without time management and organization I could not be successful. I started spending more time learning the material in my classes, while also asking my professors more questions. In the beginning of the semester I was terrified to even approach my professors. Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

Growing up, I was faced with many adversities, just like a lot of students in California school systems. I was a female, Mexican-born immigrant, growing up in Oakland in a pretty rough neighborhood. In high school I demonstrated grit by applying myself and fighting the urge to quit and finally graduating, while the curriculum helped me, there was still many other burdens in my life apart from education. In community college, when I first began, the “Student fear factor” definitely applied to me because I did not know what college was even about. I was so used to just being in high school where most people did not care if you made it to college, and my family was so busy with work and trying to keep up with rent and bills, that they had no time…

I’m sure they were just trying to scare us up to motivate us to the ou homeworks, study and be organized. Eventhough college doesn’t seem that hard, surely is not a piece of cake and that's why I have a formula or strategy that helps excel in.…

Four months ago as the summer was coming to an end, and the upcoming school year was lurking in the air like an unwanted smell, I had a fleeting, very unwelcome feeling of freshman year. No longer would I be a high school student living in my parent’s house in the small town of Parker, Colorado. I instead, would be traveling 1,145 miles to Oxford, Mississippi, and attending school with 23,000 other students. I clung to my mom at orientation like a child hiding behind their mother’s skirt because I was terrified of the unknown. I did not know what to expect of college, the south or this new, and exciting experience.…

I could say that in general I am very satisfied with how I’m doing academically, I am doing well in both of my courses. Another thing that I could say is that not only have I already taken away a lot from UCF but the book “The Other Wes Moore” by Wes Moore that was assigned for us to read has taught me a lot.
