The Chosen, the novel by Chaim Potok follows the lives of two Jewish boys, Danny Malter and Reuven Saunders, set in Brooklyn, New York, during the time of World War II. A common paradoxical theme found in this novel is that through one’s loss there is also one’s gain. A quote from Reuven’s father, David Malter states this paradox perfectly; “No one knows he is fortunate until he becomes unfortunate” (Potok 87). To me this means you don’t realize what you have until it is gone or taken away from you. There are many examples of this found in the novel and also some examples of this I can relate to my own life.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

Failure can be our greatest teacher. It teaches us skills and knowledge which cannot be learned in a classroom - skills and knowledge that are not only necessary to thrive in college, but also essential to flourish our characteristics needed to become successful in life. Specifically, the most important attributes failure can teach us are determination, patience, and resilience - qualities that are vital in keeping up with the rigor of college. As stated by Perez in his article, “The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon.” This means that the lessons we learn from failure are not just ordinary knowledge which we can get from anywhere else; they come within ourselves.…

When I opened my mailbox last summer and saw an email reads “...you have been selected for a Huamei Academy Third Tier Scholarship for the 2016-2017 school year... ”,I broke into tears. The email told me that I’ve failed to get the first tier scholarship, but more importantly, my tearsevoked by the email signified my failure on staying true to myself. I was awarded the first tier scholarship in ninth grade. I wasn’t even aware of the scholarship program in my school then, so when I entered tenth grade, I thought it would be even easier to get it again after knowing more about it and aiming for it as a goal.…

Failure catches a bad rap in our success driven world. Everyone wants to win but no one understands the magnitude of why losing is important to one’s journey. My cousin said it the best. When you’re a kid and you’re playing with your blocks, trying to figure out where each shape goes, you may put the block in the wrong place many times before you find its appropriate place. We’re happy the kid figured it out but no one acknowledges the fact that it took him or her two or more tries before he or she finally placed the triangle into its slot.…
