Personal Narrative: Improving My Skills

Great Essays
During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class GSW 1110, I learned the skills to research, write, using correct grammar and syntax, as well as setting goals to improve my skills as a writer. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers, I was able to learn those skills. Skills such as having better vocabulary by using a few new words. Another goal is having a better flow throughout the essay by not going into detail about information that does not need to go into depth. A few more goals are better planning of ways to set up an essay and having credible sources and more information about sources. Being a part of the GSW 1110 course has helped me achieve my goals to become a better academic writer. I have …show more content…
In my essay “Justifying an Evaluation” there is a great point of how I have a good example of the counter argument. Pointing out what flaws the website has but still as an overall point the website had great qualities. Being able to explain the argument against why the website was not perfect. Then, keeping a clear point throughout the paper that what the writer was writing has a good response why they feel that way with evidence. Also, having to interpret how people may see the situation or argument in variety points of views. As well as, explaining why the paper is against or agreeing to the argument that is being stated. Being clear about the argument and the counter-argument is very important to not confuse the reader so they have a good understanding which the writer is trying to point out. In the paper, I wrote “Arguing a Position” I had to explain the problem and how it can be interpreted differently towards parents, coaches, and students when they play sports. For an example, Parents can interpret that sports are very dangerous, but students and coaches, on the other hand, would say that it is healthy for the student 's body and mind. For pointing out specific points and making it clear for the reader to know what they are trying to imply how the essay is beneficial. Being able to make these accomplishments throughout the class shows that I am ready to move on into more advanced learning

According to Hacker and Sommers’ in “Constructing Reasonable Arguments”, taking a stand on a controversial topic, swaying the reader with evidence and analysis, and citing all sources used within an essay are the stepping-stones to produce a well manufactured argumentative essay. The main goal is to persuade the reader to choose the writer's side of the argument over the opposing side in an informative way. Arguments happen everywhere all the time, which means there is more than one way to look at an issue. It's recommended to research the debatable topic and look at it from multiple angles. An efficient way to present a position is to treat is like a court case and provide the reader with as much evidence to sway them while addressing any…

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
