What I Learned In Social Justice

This school year has thrown me with numerous life lessons, ones that will change my life forever. I am within days of finishing my undergraduate degree and one can only imagine how overwhelming that may feel. I am so appreciative of this opportunity to be able to reflect on this course as well as my experiences so far because my life was changed. I have completed four years of my undergraduate degree as a Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice major and I have only come out of my college experience having gained more knowledge, wisdom and fulfillment than I have ever imagined. I did not come to the University of British Columbia with the mindset that I would be studying GRSJ. I came into this institution clueless, hoping to find my passion …show more content…
When I learnt the most about the challenges and pressures these organizations face is actually prior to my current organization. The initial organization I was wanting to work with for my practicum was “Justice for Girls”. Justice for girls is a well-known organization that gave me a glimpse of the similar challenges a majority of social justice activists face. Justice for Girls is a prime example of what feminist, anti-racist and social justice researchers have to go through to push for social change. As I mentioned and discussed in class, the main reason I was unable to work with this organization was due to financial obligations. Funds is something that organizations require in order to move forward with their action plans and goals. Many of these organizations spend hours, days or even years simply researching on how to find grants and funds for their organizations. When discussing with the class the issue I was very saddened to hear, I had several classmates share that their organizations had the exact same issue. The type of social justice organizations that we discussed who face these challenges include Civil Rights Groups, Immigration Rights Groups, Criminal Justice Groups, Disability Rights Groups, Elder Advocacy Groups, Children Advocacy Groups, Feminist and Women’s Liberation Groups, LGBTQ Groups and groups that challenge Capital Punishment. The organizations that sparked an interest in me the most are organizations working to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, in schools, in justice systems, and several other sectors of society such as reproductive rights for women. The importance to end violence against women, eradicate sexism, racism, homophobia and to promote equality and justice in our society is also something I was hoping to find and to support. Working with young women to promote education, health and non-violence is something I

As a woman of color and as a student at a women’s college, I have witnessed first hand the institutions, structures, and systems that work against and marginalize women. As a Peace and Justice major with a concentration in Community Development Through Education and Policy, I have insight on how to critically analyze race, class, and gender inequities and how these inequities function in our everyday lives due to systemic and institutional oppression. I am concerned with identifying the factors that deprive women of access to resources and helping women to become agents of their lives; I hope to impact disenfranchised women personally and also through advocacy and public policy. This opportunity would allow me to explore working with at a nonprofit that is also concerned with empowerment on both small and…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

They have successfully provided women with empowerment since 1881. Their mission statement is "advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research". When brining this organization to Rutgers, we will not only help future women in the workplace, but we will also help society as a whole. Men and women working together equally is much more efficient and effective than a male-dominant work environment. When males realize they can rely on their women co-workers instead of looking down to them, the work environment automatically will become much less hostile and instead much more productive.…

On Being a Therapist by Jeffrey Kottler is an educational piece of literature that also happens to be very informative and interesting. In the book, he discusses numerous aspects of being a therapist, ranging from how one decides to engage in this work, how therapists can change clients, how clients can change therapists, to the difficulties and struggles therapists frequently face. As someone who hopes to become a therapist someday, this book was a really incredible way of learning about the profession in a more subjective and ultimately real way. Not all he says is comforting, but his choice to discuss both the good, bad, and in between have given me a more thorough understanding of what I may experience in the future. Throughout this book, Kottler discusses many subjects that have connected…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

Paper 1 : Looking at Social Movement Leadership Throughout the Civil Right era, there were many effective leaders that contributed to the success of the movement. In Origins of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Aldon Morris illustrates that to be a valuable leader like Dr. Martin Luther King and the MIA, one needs to be revolutionary and needed in the community. In Black Women’s Collectivist Movement Organization, Dr. Bernice Barnett explains that black women were the most marginalized during this time period due to their race and gender and yet, they still persevered to create the women’s political counsel (WPC) and The Club from Nowhere (CFN). In African American Women in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Belinda Robnett demonstrates that an…

“Leaning In: A Student’s Guide to Engaging Constructively with Social Justice Content” by Robin DiAngelo and Özlem Sensoy which appeared in a 2009 issue of Radical Pedagogy. In this article, DiAngelo and Sensoy inform students about the possible difficulties that can arise in an academic social justice course, and steps a student should take in to achieve in the course to gain a higher understanding of the material. DiAngelo and Sensoy tells us that it can be difficult for students to accept and understand concepts that challenge their world view. DiAngelo and Sensoy suggest that this is because students are uninformed and have strong opinions about the topics discussed within a social justice course. Never the less, it is not impossible for…

Introduction One can scarcely go through a day without coming into contact with some issue of social justice. Newspapers, television, and the internet seem to be constantly abuzz with the latest stories of injustice, racism, or the occasional story of socio-economic barriers that are finally crossed. As the Race Together campaign at Starbucks proves, a person cannot even get their morning cup of coffee without being confronted with such issues. It should come as no surprise then that if the whole world cares about such morally and ethically charged issues the church should also be so invested. In many ways, social justice is concerned with the ways in which two or more parties with characteristics whether it is race, economic position, sexual…
