What I Learned In Second Class

Improved Essays
Second grade discouraged me from giving reading and writing a chance. My peers teased me and humiliated me when I read aloud. If I mispronounced a word my classmates would start laughing and whispering, “she can’t read.” This set my attitude toward reading and writing. Every time Mrs. Ellis, my second grade teacher, would call on for volunteers to read a paragraph, I hoped she wouldn’t call my name. As third grade came around I expected it to be another school year I would dread. Mrs. Perna however was different from the other teachers. My peers were negative sponsors of literacy while Mrs. Perna was my positive sponsor of literacy. I learned from her that I will discover a new passion if, I don’t give up.

I was the most behind in my class and would get sent to the principal’s office often. When third grade came, Mrs. Perna took a different approach to her teaching and I quickly realized she was very different from Mrs. Ellis. Mrs. Perna, my third grade teacher, made learning more intriguing by adding spelling games. Which made spelling interesting since I was very involved in sports and it brought my competitive side to try my best. Mrs. Perna would also read us short stories she wrote herself. Her stories were about super humans with extranormal powers which caught my interest. Mrs. Perna observed I slept during her class, I didn’t like to read or write, and I was obnoxiously loud. I was sent to detention after class and she approached me and asked why I didn’t give any effort to participate in class with reading or try to be involved in writing assignments. This question surprised me because Mrs. Ellis never bothered to ask and assumed I was just a student who misbehaved. Mrs. Perna then asked me if my parents helped me with my homework. I explained to her that my mother did not have time to help because she worked a full time job and worked in the night. Mrs. Perna nodded her head and spoke with my mother about the situation. My mother then shared with me that she will try to be involved in my school work by changing her work schedule to help me when I got out of …show more content…
My classmates taunted me for mispronouncing words. My second grade teacher, Mrs. Ellis, would also comment my writing is not creative enough which discouraged me from participating in writing assignments. Mrs. Perna’s short stories inspired me to write stories of my own as well about adventures. My peers were my negative sponsors of literacy by discouraging me from trying to read and write. My third grade teacher was my positive sponsor of literacy by helping to discover a new eagerness towards reading and writing. I was excited to see what I can learn from my new teacher next year and carry with me my new

This course was critical in helping me transfer from the young adult I was into the business world. After dropping out of high school at a young age, most of the things that I learned in this class gave me the confidence that I needed to make the move into the new world of business. I received my GED instead of graduating high school, which proved I was smart enough to pass the test, but actually learning how to do things and communicate in the real world was not something I was very good at until I took these classes.…

Literacy and I have a love-hate relationship. I want to love it, but at the same time, I hate how hard it is for me to read and write. I didn’t learn how to read until I was out of elementary school. It wasn’t until freshman year of high school that I learned how to write a structured paragraph. My teachers didn’t teach me how to read and write.…

On the very first day of class Mr. Lee Butterfield informed us that this course would be extremely challenging and he had planned to push us all to our limits. He accomplished this, but in a way that was very rewarding in the end. Never in my life had I ever enjoyed or appreciated reading and writing. Teachers have traditionally taught students how to read, but with today’s greater understanding of the importance role literacy plays in life success and achievements, classrooms increasingly have the common goal to assist all students in gaining the joy of reading. Reading can not only help students academically, but it can also help students find comfort when facing difficult life situations, gain new interests, making connections, communicate, and discover every aspect about themselves. Donalyn Miller, the author of The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, states it best when she proclaims, reading is a choice that determines how a person spend every aspect of their life, and the best way to express love for students and people is by putting a book in their hand. (pg. 173) Every student can become a reader, and a love of reading can be cultivated in every student, when teachers become reading role model, and create a classroom environment where reading for pleasure is encouraged and supported.…

One-One-One-One For The Road For an American born and raised student, English, Literature, and Writing are commonplace in both primary and secondary school curriculums. Yet, for myself specifically, these curriculums were not the construct of any institution, instead, for a majority of my life, my education took place in my home, as a homeschooled student. And, because of this arrangement, I possessed an undiagnosed disability in writing until late in my secondary school career at a private institution. With the assistance of dedication and providence, however, my final year of secondary school was accompanied by a rapid growth in my textual composition.…

This week’s reading focused on how children develop their writing and spelling skills and ways that teachers can support their development. In Chapter 10 of “Creating Writers: Teaching Children to Write Well”, it mentions ways teachers and even their own peers are able to support each other on their writing journey. This is because, “Writing is a social act. Through interactions with others, writers come to understand the needs of their audiences” (Christie 297). When children write they usually write about things they know but by having an audience they are able to use different perspectives.…

Reflecting on this course has brought that deeper understanding of the intermediate literacy learner and their ability to decipher information through text and composing in written form. As I continue with my professional development, this course has given me the foundation needed to reach intermediate grade literacy learners by exposing them to a balanced literacy program allowing for their growth in reasoning, organizational, and application skills. Learning about literacy in grades four through six and expecting student growth was no surprise however, the growth that transpired from this educator was. Until this course…

Before grade school was over, I did not have the most interest in reading and writing in particular. Moving into middle school the next year these two subjects did not spark a passion to me; in contrast, I did enjoy science and math. Breaking the seal of what was to become of my writing came from my fifth grade teacher: Mrs. Lee.…

The short journey across the sixty-First Avenue to fifty-Ninth Street of Hialeah was filled with mixed emotions. I loved going to school each morning, yet the stinging cold often reminded me of the dread awaiting me as soon as the alarm started at exactly six o’clock. John G. Dupuis Elementary School was a few minutes from our apartment. I still remember vividly how we lined up outside the street for the school bus often wondering how many round trips the old bus had made over the years. Looking expectantly at the opposite end of the street, we almost thought the bus would one day stall and never appear, but every day it showed up when we almost gave up.…
