What I Learned In My Writing Class

1) My overall opinion on how this semester is going learning Latin is positive and I think it is going very well. I have improved my daily study routine by adding the tried and true method of old fashion handwriting vocabulary words into my notebook. The class was introduced to the Memrise online resource in the language lab and that has definitely helped me identify my need to learn to spell Latin correctly. I have no problem picking out the correct meaning and translating individual Latin words if I see it in a list, but writing from memory has always been difficult for me. I spent 22 years in the military taking multiple choice tests, so writing from memory is difficult and something I have been working on since returning to college.

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

Dear Professor Edwards, Last semester, I was a student at Colorado State University. I did not take English 121; however, I did take a class like it called Composition 130. Composition 130 was a great class that allowed me to transition easily from high school writing to college writing. I felt discouraged coming into the class at the beginning, but my writing improved tremendously after being in the class. The class was beneficial to me in several ways.…

I chose Chapter 23 “Using Source Material” in Writing: 10 Core Concepts. “Using Source Material” is important and useful information on how to use other sources in your writing effectively. Chapter 23 gives examples for how to: include enough information to back up your ideas, but not so much information that it covers up what you want to say. In addition, it gives tips for how to incorporate it into your writing. Robert P. Yagelski argues that “The challenge for many students is resisting the tendency to rely too heavily on source material so that it doesn’t take over the student’s own writing” (743).…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

I chose to revise the first and forth essay. I chose these because they are the shortest essays. I know you wanted me to revise my research essay because I did not have parenthetical citations, but during my writing center visit I asked about those and I learned where they should be and how they should look. When I revised my papers I tried to think about the questions someone else who is not familiar with the topics would ask about my papers and I answered them.…

For eighteen years, I have roamed this earth, and for thirteen of those years I have been able to harness my craft in writing. As I look back on those times, I see how much I have improved. I learned that I despised word count essays and loved creative writing assignments. My literacy journey began in kindergarten where they taught us how to write out the alphabet, my name, and simple sentences. I don’t remember everything that about my time in kindergarten, but I do remember how frustrated I was trying to write out my name.…

I became an adult on Monday, June 15, 2015 during my AP Writing class, standing in the sweltering heat, completing 50% of my term 4 grade. It was a Moth presentation, based on the Moth radio hour. We all had to plan out a story to tell, something personal with a message that would resonate universally. I swallowed my fear and an illusion of pride, looked out at the teenagers I had spent years of classes with and, in short, told them the truth. For those five to seven minutes I let my façade slip…

When I Learned to Read and Write. I first started reading and writing in preschool, my teacher was very helpful and did everything she could do to help me achieve goals, and become who I am today. When I was younger I would pretend that I could read and I would read to all of my toys. In preschool, my teacher saw me trying to read so she came over to me and started to help me sound out the words and form the sentences so that I could read. The first book I read was Dr.Seuss’ “Green, Eggs and Ham.”…

“A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.” ― Thomas Mann. Writing is a subject that is different for everyone. In my opinion if I could write about a topic I choose and I am passionate about I know my papers would be interesting to read. On the other hand, I when I am given a topic to write about I think it is harder to make the paper interesting and enjoyable to read.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
