What I Learned In My Homeroom

Improved Essays
I used to assume things about people based on how they acted in school. For example, during my sophomore year of high school, I disliked a girl in my homeroom simply because she was too happy and nice. She never complained or showed distaste for anyone or anything in school, and she never seemed to have problems with others. I thought that she was being phony, because in high school people are rarely always happy and nice to others. I never talked to her or went near her, because of my assumption, until our senior year. We were placed next to each other in art class, and slowly I began to realize people aren’t always how they seem. My judgment of her was completely wrong. I learned who she truly was, and now she’s my best friend.

Summary: Social psychologists have been debating the question “Are our social perceptions often inaccurate” for many years, each coming to their own conclusion. Social psychologists Lee Ross and Richard Nisbett argue that people’s perceptions are indeed often inaccurate, due to a “dispensationalist bias” (“Are Our Social. . .”). However David C. Funder believes that our perceptions are not often mistaken and that their behavior is due to their dispositions. Ross and Nisbett would argue that the conduction of multiple different experiments resulted in proof that people’s perceptions are often inaccurate, however Funder followed after that by disproving that statement.…

DeCarlo & Wodziak Per 4/5 Exit Activity Interactions and reactions define who you become because of people that don’t look at you from the inside, they inspect you from the outside. An example of this if you were goofy and weird at a game of baseball and someone thought you were cool and wanted to hang out with you. But, since you were weird that one person does not want to hang out with you because they think you are that weird. Another example is if you were stealing money from a lady or anybody else, anybody who knows you do that would call you a thief. But, in reality, you steal the money so you can pay the bills and get food.…

I have learned a great many things while I was a foreign exchange student in Winfield High School in United States. Before I came to America, I was shy, had low self-esteem, and gave up easily. But after I came to America, I can see that I am changed. I have been more confident through presenting my several projects and speaking in front of many people with English in classes. And at first, it was hard to talk to someone whom I have never met before, but now I feel more comfortable with that and it helped me to make many friends.…

“Woah, what is that revolting smell?” It took me a second to perceive the rancid smell but when i did I knew exactly what i was smelling, unfortunately the smell was all too familiar. The mix of body odor and gym socks tied up in the overwhelming mask of cheap perfume and cologne pervaded the air right as i stepped foot in those double doors. I was back in the place i had dreaded seeing again since June and 3 short months later here i am again, this was the sweet, sweet smell of high school. It was different this time though, before I had stepped foot inside I scrutinized the outside of the building, the towering brick rotunda read “Cottage Grove High School”.…

When it comes to reflecting on my own skills, I'd say I'm a pretty well rounded person. I consider myself to have an athletic side discovered when we started playing structured sports in gym class as well as an intelligent side when it comes to maths and sciences. The most obvious way to see this is through my performance in school and my marks. I've also identified this skill with my passion for the subjects and wanting to actually delve deeper into the content. Additionally, working with kids is something that comes naturally to me.…

As a child, I didn’t question what I was told, which on my part wasn’t the best notion. If you were to tell me that aliens exist, I would assume it was true, until I learned otherwise. As I grew, I learned that not everything everyone tells me is always true. Sometimes I have to perceive what I am being told, and deduce whether it is true or false. Being naive and callow doesn’t help when you're being told information you know nothing about.…

I knew it was wrong, but I wanted to be her friend, so I did it. Thanks god I realize on time that friendship was not good for me, and I ended it. My biggest influence has been my mom, she is my role model, and the person I am today is thanks to her. She taught me to never give up no matter how hard things are. She is always telling me “one of the hardest parts of life is deciding whether to walk away or try harder”.…

My greatest skill is that I don't let people's negative opinions on me bring me down anymore. In the 8th grade, the only thing that mattered to me was what people thought about me. I would try so much to try and conform to the many middle school trends, and I became a really self absorbed person. When entering high school, I stopped being like that and I started to care about actually important things like my grades and education. It is extremely easy to go back to your old ways and I did when I met my first boyfriend.…

I’m often caught up in impromptu debates with those around me. Perhaps I come off as pedantic, but most of my eagerness stems from my desire to share what I learn. I am still surprised by just how vast human knowledge is and even more surprised by just how lacking it is. New arguments and evidence are constantly being developed. I know that this behavior leads to my characterization as a nerd, and in many ways, I do fit that stereotype.…

According to the Thomas-Kilman Conflict Mode Instrument, my conflict style was accommodating. I would consider myself as a compromising and caring person, but I do not like to be perceived as a people pleaser. However, I have a few aspects of accommodating personality because I think of others before me. Growing up I would have handled my conflict as a competitor, but over the year of fighting and being called a “right-fighter” and proclaimed that I never think about others views but my own. After understanding, this made me change my communication, it made me listen and see what I was missing.…

Through my first year of the college experience I have learned a lot of very different things, having to do with the so called “adult world”. I have found many of these new facts interesting but not very relevant to school. What I did learn this year was many things about school itself, as well as how different it is in comparison to high school. Though I am not a fan of writing or am I a fan of English classes due to the large amount of given, and usually mandatory, writing assignments.…

In my opinion, lessons are important because they have transformed me into the person that I am today. My main transformations were when my attitude started to change; I changed my looks to fit in; and I accepted Christ in my life.…
