What I Learned In High School Writing Class

Improved Essays
My beliefs before taking this writing class was that there would be material that I didn’t learn in previous class such as high school. I thought I knew everything about writing because in high school essay were so easy to me. However, the essay we received in high school were much easier topics than I would get in college. In college you have to put more work and effort into writing because it requires more paragraphs than in high school. I knew that college writing had more than just 2 pages, I’ve heard from other students some professor require to write up to 5-7 pages. I knew I would have to put more effort in brainstorming because it was my weakness.
In this class I learned the structure of the essay, to learning how to write a thesis

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Even now, as a college student, I do not find it to be enjoyable if I am inclined to write as a requirement for a class. Many times, I find the process of drafting 5 paragraphs with 3 body paragraphs compressed between an Intro and Conclusion to be tedious and burdensome, but over time I have learned to appreciate this process. Although slaving away to move my fingers across my keyboard to type several drafts takes time, it is helpful in the end to develop a well written paper. In the past, I would settle for an average of a C on all my essays because my writing style was plain and it lacked a sophisticated tone. This was due to my use of simple sentences and awkward word choices throughout my essays.…

For eighteen years, I have roamed this earth, and for thirteen of those years I have been able to harness my craft in writing. As I look back on those times, I see how much I have improved. I learned that I despised word count essays and loved creative writing assignments. My literacy journey began in kindergarten where they taught us how to write out the alphabet, my name, and simple sentences. I don’t remember everything that about my time in kindergarten, but I do remember how frustrated I was trying to write out my name.…

In high-school, one is told what to write about and have to follow a certain type of rubric. When a teacher will usually assign an essay that will be about 2-3 pages long, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. In college, students are supposed to write in a different manner. For example, students in English 5A are taught to write in a more personal, public or academic style of writing. We are taught that for a personal essay, one is supposed to write using arguments and explanations about how one feels about a certain situation.…

    5 Paragraph Misconceptions

This list helped me to realize that I am not the only one that thinks differently when I entered college. One of the misconceptions they share with us is that “The instructor is my audience, the only person who will read my writing,” and then respond with, “Writing in college requires you to be aware of many different audiences: your teachers, your classmates, the campus community as a whole” (“Ten Misconceptions About College Writing” 1). Of course, they mention the five paragraph essay as one of the misconceptions people have over college writing. They mention that this “lousy model” is only good enough for certain situations but when it comes to composing a well written and informed essay, this wouldn’t be of any help (“Ten Misconceptions About College Writing” 1). “Your college writing tasks will ask you to build on some of the good writing habits you have (formulating a thesis, structure, organization, and the like) while requiring you to learn new formats for various disciplines and writing purposes” (“Ten Misconceptions About College Writing” 1).…

Coming into English 170 this semester I did know quite what to expect. I had always been an enthused writer who excelled at expressing himself on paper but never at this high of a level. Now at the end of my semester in Writing Seminar I can say that my approach to writing has changed to a certain extent. Coming fresh out of high school my thoughts about writing were that you first make an outline of ideas, then brainstorm a strategy to make those ideas flow together properly, and finally form that into a five paragraph essay. I now look back on that approach with laughter.…

Writing does not come easily to everyone. No one starts out writing perfect essays, and everyone has areas where they need improvement. It takes many different skills, time, and a lot of revision. High school writing is much different from college writing, and with the help from the article “What Is Academic Writing?” by L. Lennie Irvin and chapter one in “From Inquiry to Academic Writing” it is easier to understand what academic writing is about and how it works.…

Stephen King is a highly successful and popular author. He has written many stories and novels using what he calls “ 22 lessons on How to be a Good Writer”. There is strong evidence of Rule 8 “Avoid adverbs and long paragraphs with no flow”, Rule 10 “master the art of description”, and Rule 11 “Don’t give too much background information” in his stories “ The body” and “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption”. In these stories, it is clear that he takes his rules seriously. King doesn’t like adverbs, he says ”the adverb is not your friend”.…

When I first entered this classroom I did not believe I was a skilled writer, and knew I lacked certain grammar skills needed in order to succeed in writing. As we were told in the first days of class the course work that would be done by the end of the quarter I lost more trust in myself of doing well with all the papers. At that point I knew I would have to make strides to better my writing every single day in and out of the classroom. Before anything in this class finding a topic presented a struggle, and this was because I felt I needed an easy topic to find information on.…
