What I Learned In Health Class

As I look back on my experience and learning in class I can sum it all up with an ounce of prevention is worth a semester of Health 1020. Growing up as a child I would visit my grandmother often. I was an extremely picky eater in my childhood and youth, especially at home, but my grandma’s food was always better. My grandmother was not extremely educated, nor did she graduate from high school, but I respected her and she was wise. My grandmother was concerned about my eating habits and basically sat me down and said, “You are what you eat.” That phrase resonated with me, and I ventured to try new foods and add more varieties of foods into my diet. I was no longer a picky eater after that talk with my grandmother, in fact, today there are only a handful of foods that I have a distaste for, and I have eaten a huge assortment of foods.
As I have sat in health class this past year I have learned about every facet of nutrition and its’ relationship with the human body and society. This health class demonstrated the truthfulness, and wisdom my grandmother shared with me so long ago. I find it unfortunate to think of how many diseases related to the human body could be prevented by exercise, and by eating a healthy variety of nutrient-dense foods throughout life. It was a good to do a current self-evaluation of my food choices, servings, and eating habits. My favorite part of the dietary analysis was the breakdown of vitamins and minerals that I was consuming over the three-day period. Through this observation, I found that a vitamin D supplement was needed. The class textbook is saturated with information and I enjoyed studying the systems of the human body. Between the lectures in the classroom, modules online, and studying the textbook the information is now engrained in my brain and there it will
