Josh,
I am writing to you because we have a lot in common. In English 101 I saw how far behind on writing that I really was. It was by far the hardest class that I have been in so far in my journey for my degree. It was the first time that I have actually had to sit down and study multiply sources for my writing. I was scared to death when I entered the class and left the class with more confidence in my writing ability but I know that I have a long way to go to be an excellent writer. I learned in the class that it is vital to really focus on what you read to be able to articulate the facts in your writing. It was an excellent class and can be very helpful if you go in with an open mind. But I have to admit I am still terrified about this

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Writing had always been one of my difficult challenges, but the desire inside of me learning new things always push me to accept the challenges. In fact, learning a new language stays always challenging to every person. However, English 111 class has taught me many things that I never thought I will do it. The first assignment that we did a reading response to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Draft” has taught me that people learn from their mistakes, and nobody is perfect.…

I hate writing. Writing has never been my strong suit, I can solve complicated math problems and understand the structure of an atom but most of the time when it comes to writing I freeze up and don’t have any clue where to start. The things I have written are research papers or biographies and the occasional facts about yourself essay; just the things that you are assigned to do by a teacher. My writing has been pretty limited, so you can imagine my thoughts when I figured out what I had gotten myself into by signing up for English Comp 101. At first I was really scared and then I relaxed and told myself I can do it if I really try.…

English 101 taught me how to be more creative and broad about writing. Example on Essay 1 I didn’t really mention anything about Sonia Sotomayor’s mother not wanting her to work, and behind that was facts and important information about he context that I missed. I also approach my assignments differently now; I make sure my paragraphs are structured in the write order for an easy read for the reader. I realized when I start off with a good approach on a topic I have to tools and skills learned in class to expand ideas and write a solid piece of writing to read. I did also realize that I am bad to start off with, I haven’t seemed to find that spark to start me off right, so I guess that’s why they call it a shitty first…

As I think about my experiences throughout the semester of English 101, I have realized that I have learned some very important requirements that are important to help improve my writing. “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything (George Bernard Shaw).” During this course, reading and comprehending the materials given was not only a tough task for me but it was also demanding. I was challenged to change my thought process on what it was to be a good writer. The concept of understanding the value of correctly communicating thoughts differs from learning to apply the techniques needed to communicate successfully.…
