My parents had suggested that I volunteer at the Extended School Year (ESY) program for special needs students that ran for the whole month of July. Although I was hesitant due to the fact that the program began early in the morning during summer vacation, I decided to sign up in order to get an idea of whether or not working with children would be something I was interested in pursuing. When I arrived on the first day, I walked into a classroom in which the students and teachers were all familiar with one another and felt extremely out of place. However, after only spending a few days in my assigned classroom, I began …show more content…
It was then that I knew I wanted to continue working with kids. It was such a great feeling to watch both Frankie and the other students progress over the summer and improve on classroom skills or understand a lesson that they struggled with in the start of the program. That fall, I signed up to volunteer at other activities that I thought would give me more experience in working with all types of students and help me learn how to be of better help in the classroom.
When summertime came around again, I went out of my way to look for the forms to sign up for the ESY program and looked forward to attending every day. I have wanted to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant since I was in 7th grade. The school I went to housed all of the special needs children for the county. I grew up with these children in my classes and always wanted them to know that just because they have the label special needs does not mean that they are different from anybody else. I watched an OTA come to school everyday and work with these children to help them write better and kick a ball so they could go to P.E. with us. I thought to myself what an amazing job opportunity this would be to let people know that they can do anything they set their mind to.…

My mind begins to get distracted and my thoughts take over, causing me to dose off. I start to gaze at the other students in my class…

I will honestly say that when I was told that I would be interning in a fifth grade class, I was more than a little apprehensive due to the fact that I have been in mostly lower grades. I was under the impression that the fifth graders would be harder to manage. I believe that I was placed in the perfect class to allow for the most growth and understanding. Under Mr. Shealy’s guidance and coaching, my view on teaching has grown.…

I chose to volunteer at New Directions the shelter for domestic violence. When we decided what community service site we wanted to work at I had to choose between my love for children of my desire to help people who have been put in hard to escapable situations. I value community service and voiding doing things that everyone are already doing and since Bessie Weller was the mandatory location from last year I knew many people would chose to do that location. That is why I chose to do New Directions I figured it would be a location that would not have a lot of Ida B Wells’s students volunteering.…

A community is similar to a puzzle; without one of the pieces it is never flawless. Being a part of a community and participating in community service doesn’t only better us, but it helps the general public. When I signed up to volunteer at Sanford Health I wasn’t sure if I was truly helping anyone or even making a difference. Never did I think that the service I was providing would have such a positive outcome. Although I had originally thought that by volunteering I would be providing a simple service by helping nurses and tending to patients, I now know that I’ve made a difference in the lives of both those nurses as well as their patients and in doing so have impacted my own thoughts on the value of community service.…
