“This is going to be the year that I become advanced,” I thought to myself as my teacher was speaking to me about bumping me into 4th grade math. Through the years, I’ve been in many different grades. Some have had bad grades and no respect, but others have had good grades and the maturity of a grown man. Because of me skipping a year math, I got into QUEST, and My grades were stellar, I think 3rd grade was my most successful year. To begin, skipping a year of math helped me succeed. I was put into 4th grade math because my teacher and I both felt 3rd grade math was too easy for me. When I went to 4th grade math, I would do better than the 4th graders. All throughout my school career, starting all the way in elementary school, school came very easy for me. I found that I rarely had to try hard at anything because it seems like I just knew it. With very little studying I was able to maintain high grades. In middle school I was put in advance math classes and it still wasn't a challenge but then in my junior year of high school things started to get difficult.…

Kohn’s article “The Case against Grades” (Kohn, 2011) effectively captures the anxiety that most students have about grades. “In fact, students would be a lot better off without either of these relics from a less enlightened age” (Kohn, 2011) Kohn writes. I agree with Kohn’s position in this article because there were many days in high school where I remember skipping due to the fact that I didn’t fully understand what was being taught to me. I, in turn, grew anxious about not being good enough and started failing.…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

“Melissa, levantate rapido” that translates to Melissa you have 5 seconds to get up, and be ready or you will feel the wrath of The Chancla (a weapon used from all Hispanic mother’s to demonstrate authority.) Ten seconds after shouting at the top of her lungs for me to get up, my mother begins her day as she always does, providing my father, younger siblings and I with a meal. Math has always been a difficulty for me because math is very hard in general and takes lots of effort to understand. I somewhat struggled in middle school because in like the 6th and the 7th grade I easily achieved high scores on majority of my tests and assessments. Then in 8th grade I had a really difficult time on understanding the new concepts the class learned such as the equation y = mx+b because it was really different from what I'm use to.…
