What I learned in my first semester at college….

1. Don’t kid yourself, you’re terrified & you should be
I remember being super emotional that day that I moved into my dorm. My parents were super stressed out and trying to remain calm, however I was a nervous wreck. I was so excited all summer and then the day came and suddenly I was terrified and filled with anxiety. The moment my parents were parking the cars and I had to sign my contract of dorm living alone, I remember my teeth started chattering and my body became chill. I was alone and had to move all this stuff into my “home”. Emotions are going to run high so just let it happen and try your hardest to not lash out or be a pill, it’s an exciting time, but one of the hardest days thus far.

2. You’ll learn the true meaning of “Family”
One of the first weekends I went home I remember crying as I walked through my garage into my house. Suddenly I was surrounded with people who loved me unconditionally and prayed for me constantly, something that’s not very common to find at college. I know it’s pretty typical to hear that “you’ll learn to appreciate this when you leave”, but that is SO TRUE! I had a roommate who didn’t have to study and would pull an A every time. You are going to get frustrated and want to drop out. Through countless exams and failures, I have learned that 1. Grades are not eternal and 2. I gave that exam my best shot so I should be proud of myself for the hard work I put in. Are you going to get discouraged every time an exam comes around? Yes. However, continue to pray and study even harder and communicate with your professors. It’s going to be the best feeling in the world getting that exam back that maybe you got a B or even an A on and knowing you worked so hard for

I've realized that I have no chance of getting an “A” at this point and it's really making me upset, and kind of sad. I’m not sure that I’m able to completely overlook this however I have tried to find some positives. My parents will be very upset with me and my GPA will drop but there are some good things still. A “B” overall is not very bad for a grade, and if I’m able to get an “A” on the final then i will have an “A” as my semester grade which will make me and my family very happy.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair.
