What I Learned At Hoby Observation

It was an inferno of a day when I arrived at the UCO campus, where the seminar was being held. I was tired, hot, grumpy, and extremely anxious about being away from my family for a long period of time. The idea of having to meet so many new people made me want to throw up. However, from the second I met the first HOBY volunteer I knew everything was going to be okay. As if to spite my fears and initial bad attitude, HOBY was informative and entertaining. Everyone was kind and I felt safe and at home. Even though I could easily understand the apprehension a sophomore might feel while contemplating whether or not to apply to this program, I would strongly recommend that everyone who has to possibility to attend should attend because this program was a once in a lifetime opportunity that taught me how to be brave and how to lead others into being brave, all the while giving me the chance to make new friends and travel to places I have always wanted to go to. To attend these panels or speeches the students got to go on many marvelous field trips. We received the honor of visiting the Oklahoma state capitol, The Oklahoma medical Research Foundation, and The Oklahoma Hall of Fame. At each of these locations educated professionals would teach us about how to lead others and ourselves. We were gifted with the chance to listen to amazing individuals such as James Williamson, one of HOBY’s founders, Doctor Courtney Griffin, a medical researcher, and Doctor Marion Paden, CEO of Leadership Oklahoma. By sending us to these interesting places to speak to these fascinating people HOBY managed to keep us interested and engaged, and even though i was exhausted by the end of the day, I knew it was worth it for all the knowledge I had gained and for all the fun my new friends and I
