Reflective Essay: Sophomore Level Class

Improved Essays
As a first-term Freshman, English 202 was a daunting prospect. Not only was it my first taste the college experience, but it was a Sophomore level class. After the course, however, I am happy to say I have managed to exceed all my wildly terrible dreams for how I would end the semester. I will not end up with a grade I’m happy with, but I have gained the confidence I need to continue with this concentration. I believe I have learned a great deal about various literary theories, how many there truly are, and how little I care about any of them past New Criticism. Additionally, I have learned I am great at applying literary theories in practice, composing essays, and frantically searching up key terms during a 20-minute quiz. I won’t be able to get the results I want by solely relying on essays and googling, however, and I believe I need to work on paying attention during lectures, contributing to in class discussions, and retaining what I learn during class instead of skating by on open note quizzes. …show more content…
It’s such a broad statement, I expected a boring class about all the basics of English. I only took this class because some advisor during SOAR signed me up for it. I had no choice of teacher, not that I would know which one to choose either way, and only one option for the time. Going in, I expected a lot of essays about random topics and quizzes on pieces of literature, something quite like my high school experience. At this point, that’s what English Studies meant to me, five paragraph essays and literature were all I

Looking back on the last four years of my life as a student of English, I have come to the conclusion that they were years well spent. Throughout these four years, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that is indispensable, and will be of great value to me in the career path I am pursuing. I take pride in the fact that I am not just an English major, but have concentrated in Advanced Composition and Rhetoric. This sense of dignity; however, was not always at the forefront of my mind or even considered, for on more than one occasion I had doubts concerning the process, and even became somewhat antagonistic towards the requirements I had to take to complete the process. These feelings of doubts and antagonism stem from the…

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

On the first day of school, I remember walking into class and seeing all of the new people in my class. I also remember meeting all of my new teachers. I had no idea how much that I would learn, and I had no idea how much I would struggle to learn the new material. One particular class that I feel that I have learned a lot in is WHAP. WHAP stands for world history AP.…

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

“I have to go here, dad. I just have to,” I told my father during our first tour of Colorado Mesa University’s campus. “I already feel like a Maverick,” I admitted as I straightened out my new CMU ball cap from the campus bookstore. It was a strange feeling knowing that I would no longer be Lakeland High School’s most spirited student, but there was excitement in knowing that I would soon show my pride for Colorado Mesa. Images of my blue and white spirit wear quickly changed to be maroon and gold.…

I had never been more scared coming into a college class. Horror stories about English 250 had filled my ears and consumed my brain. They would say, "professors never give a grade higher than a C." Or, "prepare yourself for failure. " I wasn 't sure if I was ready for this stress, and contemplated waiting another semester just to put this class off. Not only did I decide to believe everyone, I also knew my English background wasn 't strong, so I mentally prepared myself for a horrendous semester.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…
