Reflective Essay About The Things I Learned About Myself

As I have journeyed throughout my first half of a semester, I have learned a few things. Some were myths that I believed to be true, that turned out to be false and others were small points that I was never taught in high school. I am not five-star rated in the English department or anything related to writing a paper, because my strong suit is in mathematics. I can figure out any equation or formula you give me but giving me a paper to write is confusing to me. I have learned how to use my time wisely and make smart decisions on how long to spend working on my essays at a time, and when to start my essays. I was honestly proud of myself when I wrote the memoir essay because I had never written one or even heard of a memoir before. So when I was given the assignment to write one, I was taken back at first but up for the challenge. Again, I am not a fan or lover of writing, but I knew I could write about a time that changed my life and keep it short. Not writing about the events leading up to it, just the moment it happened. I also liked the fact that there were no citations in the writing. While I am not terrible with citations, they are not my favorite thing to work on. One thing I have learned about myself is I am indecisive in my writings, just like in life. I am a very …show more content…
I am not very comfortable with putting my work on the internet for others to pick through and tell me of my mistakes. Having one or two people I know peer edit is one thing, but I have always hated sharing my essays online, I did in high school as well. Because of this, I need to do a better job of going to the writing center. I know I would receive help there but I hate the fact that the person is only looking for flaws in my writing. They might comment on the good but their purpose is to look for the bad. I know I am not the best writer and I prefer to not share my writings with

At the start of this semester when we would write papers I would just go along with the topic. Once we got to pick our own topic for essay four it showed me that there is value in what I was writing about. I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. In addition, McAdams…

During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class GSW 1110, I learned the skills to research, write, using correct grammar and syntax, as well as setting goals to improve my skills as a writer. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers, I was able to learn those skills. Skills such as having better vocabulary by using a few new words. Another goal is having a better flow throughout the essay by not going into detail about information that does not need to go into depth. A few more goals are better planning of ways to set up an essay and having credible sources and more information about sources.…

Writing is different for everyone. We all have interesting stories to tell. If there is one thing that is true for every writer, it is that we all have an inner critic. Allegra Goodman advises writers how to get past their inner critic in her article, “Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work”. Silencing my inner judgments can be one of the most challenging parts of writing, but once the critic is silenced something magical and therapeutic emerges.…

I have learned that improving my writing in any way can actually help me tremendously. Something as simple as having good word choice or making your paper unique can be a huge difference in whether or not you get into your favorite college or receive a scholarship. I plan to use everything I have learned to help progress as my future continues. I started out this semester with procrastinating when it came to writing papers, but I soon found out that you have to put a great amount of effort into becoming a good writer. At the beginning of the year I was really nervous about taking your Composition 1 class. You see, writing papers was never one of my strong traits. Looking back on this semester, I can see just how much my writing has improved. I went from being a writer who stressed over every tiny detail of a paper into someone who feels more confident in her writing to actually start enjoying what I put in my papers. Even though I stressed over every detail in my writing I still lacked a lot of the knowledge I needed to not make as many errors.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

English 2010 has been a learning experience for me, I've been able to learn a lot about english that I did not know or work on before. With the first essay that we worked on I did a memoir I really enjoyed working on this paper, In class we were able to get freedom to add pictures to are pictures make it a little bit more creative I certainly was not used to this; I’ve been told my whole schooling experience that you have the intro and the conclusion and three body paragraphs. The memoir I was able to write to what I felt like I needed it to be, add pictures so it could appeal more to the eye when reading and also made it easier.…

I Have Learned This is my second year at Stephens College, but I just finished my first semester as an education major, and it was amazing! I started out my college career as a psychology major, but I plan to graduate with an education degree, and fulfill my dream of teaching children. Throughout this semester I have learned many different things about teaching that will stick with me my entire career. I learned about the teaching and learning process through the course work I was given, the time I spent in the classroom teaching lessons, as well as the times that I sat back and just observed the preschool and elementary classrooms.…

Have you ever pondered the idea of existing solely for yourself? We exist in life individually, but when we share our stories with others we create the possibility of someone else being able to relate. In a way, sharing my personal journey statement can bring me together with others who see the same vision as myself. I know this isn’t the kind of story you’d expect to hear, but I can guarantee you this is a story that needs to be heard. My journey of self-development has taken scale on a variety of experiences.…

When people ask me to describe myself, I always draw a blank, I never know what to say, I’m caught off guard because I don’t really love talking about myself too often because I am someone who likes to listen rather than to talk. I always have to think about what I should say to make a good impression on whomever is asking me the question. There is a lot about me that you can see by just looking at me; I have short brunette hair, I’m short, hazel eyes, I’m quiet, and more. However, there are certain personality traits about me that every single person I know on a personal basis can tell you; I am candid, I am shy, and I am very loving. I am candid and by candid, I mean I am always very truthful and frank.…
