APA Reflection Essay

To be completely honest, I was not excited about this class whatsoever. I have never enjoyed English, I always found it to be the most boring subject. Since I did not enjoy English I never really felt like I truly learned anything, however, after taking this class I have learned a lot. I learned how to actually write a paper using the APA style guide that is used in my field of study. I have learned what kind of information is important to include in the paper that I write and what could be left out. With every paper that I wrote for English 300 over the past few weeks, I learned a little more about writing that I could incorporate into the next assignment. Although I am very excited to be done with the semester, I am very happy that I took …show more content…
Towards the middle of my paper I use quotes from deaf and hard of hearing students that explain how extracurricular activities have a positive impact on them. By using these quotes, it allows the reader to feel happy for the students because they are happy. Not too far after I use those quotes, I also discuss a school district in the state of Washington that allows deaf and hard of hearing students to have the same extracurricular opportunities as all other students. This lets the reader feel like this school district is practicing a form of equality with all of their students. I did not use a lot of pathos throughout my paper and I feel that is a good thing. If too much pathos is used, then the paper is full of too much emotion. I think I did a pretty good job of balancing the use of ethos, logos, and pathos throughout my argumentative essay.
One thing I feel that my paper lacks is the use of good transitions. When I wrote my rough draft for the in class peer review, I had zero transitions in my paper. After I received some feedback from my peers, I had a better understanding of how to include transitions. However, I still do not feel like my transitions are the best but I feel like the reader can get a good understanding of what the paragraph is going to be

Honestly I think i didn't learn a whole lot. Also I have learned that I definitely do not like doing research papers. I think that we should do something more enjoyable other than writing a few page miniature essay about a topic that you like, I think that if we do this we should be given a topic we do not know much about. This would help because it would give us greater experience on how to search a topic other than on something we might know a lot about. But that is just how I feel, to me I hate to do anything English class related I would much rather be in a class that I enjoy no…

Whelan uses several strategies to appeal to her reader’s emotions. The first strategy Whelan uses is putting the words of a student in her argument. This strategy involves the words of a first-year student describing his motivation. To illustrate, Whelan states, “Dennis, a first-year student in one of my sociology classes, wrote in a paper: ‘Motivation for me used to be found in others, never in myself. I always needed to be yelled at or pushed to do something’”…

In today’s day and age, almost every young adult is told that attending a four-year university is the next step following high school, but two articles question the idea that college is essential and suggest a different type of post high school education. The first article I analyzed was “Should Everyone Go to College?” by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, where the authors discuss several factors about a traditional four-year university and question whether the benefits outweigh the costs. The other article I analyzed was “The New Liberal Arts” by Sanford J. Ungar, in which Unger tries to promote liberal arts colleges and show how they are more beneficial than traditional four-year universities. Both articles, in a way, were essentially trying…

To summarize the APA report, it argues that the article did a poor job in six ways of explaining how girls and women are sexualized and how sexualization negatively affects them. Two critisms the APA had for the article would be over-determined impact of sexualization on girls and women and conflation of objectification, sexual objectification, and sexualization. In the over-determined section, it tells us how sexual images and sexualization can have negative impact. The author tries to prove their point by using certain tactics like, only focusing on the negative impact, being bias towards evidence that could prove that there are upsides to sexual images, they’re not specific about what counts as sexual imagery, and using terms that have strong…

My grades this past year were and are not indicative of who I am as a student, or as a person in general. My junior year of high school, I decided to do PSEO, thinking it was an easy way to get credits for both high school and college. I did not realize the struggle I was going to have just trying to be accountable for myself during my senior year. My daily schedule consisted of work, soccer, managing the high school boy’s hockey team, volunteer work, spending time with my high school friends and taking college courses. I took the most challenging classes through Anoka-Ramsey Community College, thinking that like high school these would be the best for me.…

Final I have always loved to write all my ideas down on paper. However, when it came to writing college level essays… well, I just wasn’t very good at organizing them to all make sense. This year in English 1010, I have learned how to incorporate transitions words into my writing. The text in “Rules for Writers” defines Transitions as words that help an essay flow from idea to idea. They help the reader better comprehend what has been read and what is about to be read (Page 64).…

I did not know much about these formats until English Composition I—my Professor started us on APA for a couple of weeks and that made the MLA learning process much easier. Writing in these documentations has opened my horizons and has educated me to speak about a project with more of a choice. I am majoring in Pre-Nursing…

Pathos is the most important part of the rhetorical argument because it truly expresses the feelings of the writer to the audience and easily allows them to absorb the material due to the emotion filled with writing. Pathos is defined as the power of speech, literature, and other forms of expression of evoking a feeling of sympathy and compassion from the reader. The essay will demonstrate how the effective use of pathos will strengthen arguments. Pathos is the strongest of the three rhetorical arguments because it reveals the emotions of the writer, it convinces the audience of the arguments of the author through emotions, and it can acquire the desired reaction more easily.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

Arguing and debating is an important part of the human existence. Yet few people find themselves able to properly argue and win. One man, Jay Heinrichs, uses his knowledge in rhetoric, the art of arguing and persuasion, to write Thank You for Arguing. Heinrichs splits his book into four parts, offense, defense, advanced offence, and advanced defense. The first part, “Offense,” lays out the basics of arguing, starting with “Set Your Goals” so that you know what to argue about and how to go about arguing.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

Reflection Precis #2, State Responses to Terrorism (3/17/2016) Part I: In reading Manfred F R Kets de Vries’ article on The Spirt of Despotism: Understanding the Tyrant Within, gives an insight that, “the disposition to violence exist in all of us,” meaning that all humans have a natural tendency to act with violence against others with the act of power. To take a look at a slight example on having power, Hector did his presentation on torture, he shared a YouTube link on some interviews by Brian Ross. The interviews were given to John Kiriakou about his insights on waterboarding, which is a form a torture where individuals are submerged in water for long moments, while strapped down, and being interrogated. One of the comments made by the interviewee was his statement of “because we are Americans and we are better than that.”…
