What I Learned: A Class Analysis

Improved Essays
This class became one of my favorites despite the unpleasant time it was offered. I learned so much in this class, well I learned a lot from you I should say. As you may know I’m a quiet person, I like to listen a lot more than what I like to talk. In conversations I’m always the listener and never the talker and this is mainly because I never know how to express my feelings or how to go about my issue/problem. After taking this class I realized that the main reason I never asked or seek for help when I needed it was for this reason, not knowing how to start or express my emotions, thoughts and wants. I used to believe or made myself believe that no one needed to know my life and that I was strong enough to deal with it myself. And I guess I was strong enough, but I was only strong enough to some point where all I could do was shove everything to the bottom but not actually solve it. I have gain a lot of knowledge and I know that what I did to myself was not healthy, but now I know how to express those thoughts, feelings, wants and desires without feelings like I am stuck in my own problem that I instead decide to shove it down. Even though I feel a lot comfortable sharing my problems, I’m still in the process in developing that and working in making it come more naturally. …show more content…
I tend to always understand the other person even if I don’t really understand them or I at least try to understand them. however, taking this class I learned that understanding might not always be the right way to help someone because in various occasions I noticed that the more I try to understand him/her the less of a good listener I’m being this is because I am not fully helping that person solve their issue. If I don’t help that person than he/she might continue doing the same thing pretending that nothing is wrong because someone they know thinks it’s

As I looked over my 13 years of life, I have come to the conclusion that I am a somewhat privileged person. Our family hasn’t had problems with food, or keeping a roof over our heads. I have had the advantages of going to school without a problem, summer camps, tennis, and the video games I play. The only real disadvantage I see is affording for college. It is a lot of money, so I am expected to get scholarship.…

There are many factors between race, and class that are leading to an increase in criminal behavior. In the article “What’s class got to do with it?” Mauer gives plenty of examples of linking factors between race, and class that are leading to an increase in criminal behavior. One of the examples given is poverty in many inner cities neighborhood, which affects more African-American than it does white or Hispanic, not because of the poverty, but because of the concentration of it in black neighborhood. Throughout the article Mauer points out that poverty alone isn’t the cause of an increase crime rate, but that concentrating poverty in a specific neighborhood causing the individuals living their to have less opportunity to advance in society,…

In Greg Mantsios’ essay, “Class in America-2012”, Mantsios depicts different aspects of social class. It is fair to say that Mantsios is a believer that the rich exploit the poor, and that the rich get richer, while the poor get poorer. In his essay, there are four myths about class in America, ten realities of class in America, and three different profiles of people’s lives since birth, all of whom have different social class levels. Social class categorizes people into upper-call, middle-class, and lower-class, and in Mantsios’ essay, he highlights how social class causes division in the United States while he favors the idea of the radical redistribution of wealth. While Manstios claims that the rich exploit the poor, he does not emphasize…

Just two weeks ago, I had helped create and co-host a facilitated class for one of my courses based on the doctrines of peer mentoring, called SCIE 511. SCIE 511 itself is a revolutionary class unlike any university courses I have taken before in my life. I find it both radical and empowering to allow the students/mentors take reign over the class for a whole hour, while the professor oversees but does not disrupt the creative process of the students. The class I co-facilitated was based on Jack Mezirow’s theory of transformative learning. Based on the ideas he presented in his paper, the two other mentors in my group…

During my analysis of Nick Tingle’s “The Vexation of Class” and Paulo Freire’s “The Importance of the Act of Reading”, it quickly became evident that both authors chose to reflect on the experiences and challenges that students face when entering a classroom, and did so through the perspective of both a student and a teacher. Tingle explains his vexation experienced growing up within a working-class household—complimenting his argument by explaining the struggles endured by students who have been a part of a working-class school. Tingle begins building his plausibility with personal facts and reputable sources, citing convincing information, and making valid arguments that allow his emotional appeals to be successfully employed. However, toward…

Imagine living in a fantasy world where everything is pitch perfect the way you wanted to be, but then, you wake up to the harsh reality to feel trapped and animated on the inside. This is how I first view my life story for the last three years. At first, I never thought this class would help me realize who I am nor what I have to value until eight weeks ago. To start off, I have looked at my life in a new light and sees how I should understand others before I judge them, as well as, to understand the importance of morals and values. Everyone has their own values and morals that they believe in to determine what is right and wrong in life, so have I. Not everyone can agree to the same stuff about how one’s should live our life, but instead learn from our value and believe to make our own story in our life.…

When I first came into class, I had a negative outlook on the entire course. I thought it was going to be like the speech class I took my sophomore year in high school; basically had to do a presentation /speech every week and listen to the same criticism of what you did right and wrong. Because of that class I’ve never been particularly enjoyed public speaking. However, this Intro to Speech class has changed my perspective I didn’t there were so many studies in the communication field such as the FIRO needs and interpersonal communication.…

Goal I The first goal of the program was to “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate study or careers in which psychological training is relevant”(). Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…

Writing has always been a struggle for me for as long as I can remember. I find it difficult to put my thoughts on a paper, especially if I have to do it in another language. Some people think that as long as they can speak a language or communicate with other people, it is enough. However, these people are totally wrong. People do not only need to speak a language fluently, but they also have to be able to write it.…
