What I Have Learned About Adversity Essay

"When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.” (1 Corinthians 13:11 New Living Translation) In all honesty, I am ready to for my teenage years to be over, however, it has been a growing experience for me. The worst parts of my life have happened during my teens, but some of the best parts of my life have happen as well. The years I have been in my teens have been anything but normal and conventional, however, I believe the quote from the German philosopher, Friendrich Nietzsche, is true. He says, “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.” In my teens, I have learned about adversity, myself, and God. First, I have learned about adversity. Since the beginning of my teenage years, my family’s life took a turn for the worst. My father lost his job as a pastor due to financial reasons because of the effects of the Great Recession. My life had never been that dramatic till both my parents had no jobs. I felt alone. Fast-forward a couple years late, the family is on food stamps and we’re trying to find answers for our money problem. The answer was for my father to go back to school and squeeze it out until he is out. It was not easy. Feeding four hungry people with $600 a month of food stamps and nothing else is hard. These years taught me about what my friends will never know, what adversity is. Second, I have learned about myself. During these hard times, I have learned about myself more than ever. I…
