If you were to ask me at the beginning of the semester what I expected from English Composition, I would not have answered with much. Previous English classes have all been repetitive, with the exception of what books are read each year. However, as the semester progressed, I began to realize how much this class had to offer. Throughout this semester, I learned many valuable skills such as drafting, crafting introductions, and critical analysis.
What seemed to be a simple concept was never truly appreciated until writing my cultural essay. This essay was the largest I have ever done, and having such a large topic to research made for a rough beginning. This was an interesting idea that was neglected in previous English classes. My first introduction to this was with the analytical essay. For this essay, I decided to look into one of my favorite bands, Three Days Grace. Until this point, I just enjoyed the songs for the instrumentals, never truly listening to the words. Once I started analysing the lyrics, I realized how much more the songs were intended to portray. Along with this, I had to prove what I was claiming when breaking down the lyrics. This required research of each song and the band itself. Not only that, but I had to be able to clarify the credibility of these sources. With an overwhelming amount of information on the internet, there is no true way to filter out false claims. Therefore, it is our jobs as writers to determine the credibility of information. This is skill that I will continue to use for years to come. Now that it is the end of the semester, I would gladly take back every preconception I had walking in on the first day. English Composition is a valuable, and informative class that is important for any major. This class helped me understand the importance of drafting, creating proper introductions, and analysis, even if they are neglected by most people.
