Interestingly enough, this occurs before the film even begins, as we are first introduced to Jules and Vincent in-media-res as they make their way to the apartment. Usually the next stage is supernatural aid, where the hero receives help with their journey by some otherworldly force, but Tarantino chooses to switch this stage places with the first threshold. The first threshold is when the hero faces a “threshold guardian, standing for the limits of the hero’s present sphere, or life horizon. Beyond them is darkness, the unknown, and danger.” The first threshold, in this case, is the door to Brett’s apartment. Beyond this door lies a series of events that will change Jules’ life dramatically. And, in dramatic fashion, Jules and Vincent hesitate for a long period of time before entering, which builds suspense. It is after they enter the apartment that Tarantino brings in supernatural aid. After they kill Brett, a previously hidden assailant emerges from the bathroom and fires multiple times upon Jules and Vincent at point-blank range, missing completely. Jules attributes this event to “divine intervention”. This near death experience causes him to rethink his entire way of life, to renounce his violent, gangster ways. This, of course, is the next stage, revelation. The revelation causes the hero to go through a transformation, and they return from the abyss to the real world, bringing wisdom with them to bestow upon others.
