Improved Essays
I did not really understand what honor truly meant to me until I was about thirteen years old. The exact moment was when my father told me that I had to protect my mother and sister no matter what. Then he just gave me a look. A look that says “Do whatever it takes.” A look you would only understand if you were really close to someone. He only told me this because he was leaving the United States for a long period of time. For, I would have to be the “man of the house.” At thirteen years old, right? I didn’t really know what he meant then. But, now that I am older, I understand completely. He wanted to make sure that I would protect them. He wanted me to understand that even if I was put in a situation where I would have to kill someone to keep my family safe, he …show more content…
Some say that killing one human is like killing all humankind. It’s as if the person has dishonored themselves and the world they live on. These types of people are seen as sinful people by religious extremists. Yes, being honorable could mean someone is killed. But it could also mean someone will be defended, whether it’s physically or emotionally. To a religious person, they don’t see that. They just see killing as a sin. They think that people who kill have done nothing but cause havoc in this world. That they created a straight path to Hell and will be punished for it in the afterlife. There is no good excuse for killing someone.
Furthermore, some people would rather honor their hard work instead. An amateur artist, for example, will not let you criticize their hard work. The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum is a reflection of the problems in West Germany during the 1970s. It was a time where student movements and political struggles were happening. This was when journalists would stop at nothing to get their name known in the field. The film goes into the human rights violations in what should be a peaceful, democratic country but actually ends up showing the cruel nature of the press and the tendency they have to spread lies and mislead the facts. The lies and confusion that the film exposes emphasizes the silent cooperation between the media and the state, which is essential in maintaining power.…

The Buddha has advised everyone to abstain from killing. If everybody accepts this advice human beings would not kill each other. In the case where a person's life is threatened the Buddha says even then it is not advisable to kill out of self protection. In recent years many scientists and some religionists have used the expressions like 'humane killing, 'mercy killing', gentle killing' and 'painless killing' to justify the ending of a life. Buddhism can never accept these arguments because it is not how the killing occurs that is important but the fact that a life of one being is terminated by another.…

How does Marquez present gender roles in Chronicle of a death foretold? Chronicle of a death foretold takes place in a small Colombian coastal town somewhere around 1950. In this city conservative morals and machismo prevail where honor is an important aspect of the citizens life for which one should kill if necessary. This mentality also explains why women and men are expected to behave the way they do in the novel. Women are portrayed as weak, powerless, live a sedentary life and should always take care of their husband while, in the other hand, men are expected to defend their honor at any cost and, if financially stable, can marry whoever they want to.…

But let’s define honor, there are two people’s definitions we should look at. The first is Noah Webster whose American Dictionary is the reason Americans spell it H-O-N-O-R, the second person is Samuel Johnson whose English Dictionary is why people across the Atlantic spell it H-O-N-O-U-R. Johnson differentiated two types of honor that are relevant to the question in the beginning. The first is what he called nobility of soul, magnanimity, and the scorn of meanness, this honor is not derived from something competitive, but rather from perceived virtuous conduct, your integrity, and good morals. But what counts as a merit, a virtue?…

These commandments, that are still followed today, are the laws that God handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai (Ten Commandments 1). The Ten Commandments that people know are actually only the first ten, out of 613 commandments, that were handed down to the Jewish people (Rich 1). The commandments are all of equal importance, because we have no way of knowing which ones the creator meant to be the most important (Rich 1). All of the 613 commandments have to do with at least one of the more famous, Ten Commandments (Rich 1).…
