What has happened to Violet? In the young-adult science fiction novel, Feed, written by M.T. Anderson, a teenager named Titus visits his girlfriend in the hospital because she had fell extremely ill since there was a malfunction in her feed, her efficiency went down, and because she had lost a year of her memories.
To begin with, the reason why Violet had become very sick was because someone had hacked her feed. I know this information because I examined a few context clues in the story to help. In paragraph 12 it states, “They’re fixing the malfunction. For the time being. The doctor’s coming out.” This means there is some kind of problem that the doctors are trying to fix in her feed. In paragraph 21 it states, “The next day, I was at her house. It was all weird. We didn’t talk. I don’t know why. We didn’t open our mouths. We just sat there, silent, chatting.” This means that Violet and Titus are very nervous to talk to each other, so they talk through their feeds instead. …show more content…
In paragraph 18 it says, “If things neural were going swimmingly with Vi, the number you detect would be about ninety-eight percent.” Later on in paragraph 19, it states, “It said Violet Durn, Feed Efficiency: 87.3%. He stared at me. I stared at him. We were like, just, there. The efficiency went up to 87.4%.” These two evidences from the story mean that if you were to have a normal feed efficiency, it would be about ninety-eight percent, but Violet’s feed was a problem because her feed was 87.3% and 87.4%. I can tell that Violet is very worried about her efficiency because in paragraph 29 it states, "She was pressing her palms into her thighs as hard as she could." I can tell that she is worried because whenever I press my hands hard against my thighs, I am usually concerned about
