Familiar Magic! By Anneliese Justine Carey
Chapter One I tried to keep my excitement to myself as I walked into the ceremony hall; the observer from the DMA (Department of Magical Affairs) and one of the summoning instructors Mrs. Justin were waiting at the center of the room for all the students. Mrs. Justin started talking about how proud she was of everyone and that if we didn’t succeed, it was alright and we could try again in a few weeks. She went on about lots of other things that I didn’t care about. Once Mrs. Justin stopped babbling the observer stepped forward and said “When I call your name, you will come forward and carry out your familiar summoning spell. If you succeed you will name your familiar and leave. If you fail you will simply leave”

Finally, I heard “Richelle Rivera”. I walked to the center of the room; I raised my arms above my head, chanting the incantation under my breath. A portal opened and out came a long furry creature that leapt into my arms.

“That ferret is just adorable!” Mrs. Justin cooed “Tell me, Lizzie, what are you going to name it.”
I lifted up my ferret to get a better look at her. “I think I’ll name her Halcyon.”
“That’s an excellent name!” Mrs. Justin beamed.

For some reason, I felt like she didn’t actually like the name, but I didn’t really care what Mrs. Justin thought. I smiled at her and thanked her for the compliment. I left the ceremony hall somewhat quickly after that.

Once I got outside I walked to the mage’s park downtown. Halcyon had started getting quite hyper by the time we got there. After I sat her down, I pulled out my book on familiars.

Long ago in the deep, blue oceans and the boundless seas near Greece, peace did not exist in the waters. Two siblings, Lavendria and Poseidon, were enemies who did not love one another, like brother and sister should. The two fought like cats and dogs, constantly nagging at one another. The urge to start a fight was uncontainable, similar to brawls between the two common house pets. Poseidon, god of the sea and earthquakes, specifically ruled over the Mediterranean Sea.…

In Patricia McKissack 's version of the Little Red Riding Hood tale entitled “Flossie and the Fox”, the reader is introduced to Flossie a young ill-educated little girl who is sent by her grandmother to deliver eggs to “Miz Viola” (McKissack). Early in the tale it is easily assumed that Flossie is a naive little girl as she asks her grandmother “How do a fox look? I disremember ever seeing one” (McKissack). Unsure what a fox actually looked like, when the protagonist encounters an unknown critter she faced him head on, “ nodding a greeting the way she had been taught to do” (McKissack). In this tale the critter is forthcoming that he was indeed a fox expecting to invoke fear in the mere child as he is accustom.…
