In 1968, a battle happened on the Jordanian soil between the Jordanian army and Fatah and the Israeli army. I never knew all the details of the Battle of Karameh although my grandfather was one of the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Karameh to defend our country Jordan. I knew a few details about what happened in the Battle of Karameh from school and some documentary movies, but I thought I should know more because it’s a historical event that happened with my grandfather. However, my grandfather never told me his story when he fought in the Battle of Karameh. I believe the reason behind my grandfather never telling me about his story is that I had never asked him about it. I was afraid that if I asked him he will remember memories he …show more content…
In the early mornings of the 21st of March 1968, my grandfather was on duty at Wadi Shaeb, him and his friend were talking and his friend noticed a tank coming towards them. My grandfather’s friend asked my grandfather if the tank was one of the Jordanian tanks. Before finishing this part my grandfather stopped talking for seconds and then said in a genteelly low voice “may god forgive your soul my friend”. Then I told my grandfather to continue the story if he feels comfortable telling it. He lighted his cigarette up and continued talking by saying “I saw the tank coming towards us, and I noticed that the color of the tank wasn’t the same color as the Jordanian tanks. I looked to the other side and saw to Jordanian military trucks were heading to the road that the israelian tanks where at without knowing that the tanks were there. Neither the israelian tanks or the Jordanian military trucks saw each other. We couldn’t warn who were driving the trucks because the radios wouldn’t work. As soon as the Israeli tank saw our trucks it attacked it and destroyed the first truck they saw.” My grandfather stopped talking because he felt thirsty. He went to get a glass of water and I was waiting for him impatiently to hear the rest of the story. When my grandfather came back I told him “please continue the story for me, I want to know what happened

The narrative, “A Story of War and Change” by Reza Kiarash details the gruesome horror of the Iran-Iraq war through the experiences of the author as a paramedic within the Iranian army. What is immediately noticeable by the reader is how the author recounts his memory in short, staccato esque sentences. Evidence of such is provided when the author writes “ Yes, it is”. The lack of sentence sophistication helps immerse the reader into the atmosphere of the campaign the author is fighting in. As events escalate further within the story, the choppy sentences help create an aura of urgency for the reader.…

This novel helps to teach about the truth that lies in war, whether or not one has experienced it firsthand themselves. This novel depicts the truth of awareness of mortality. According to O’Brien, telling stories is important because they join the past with the future and they last forever, even when someone forgets it, it’s still there. He uses the metaphor, “stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story” (O’Brien, 38). This states how a story is still there despite the fact that the person who told it is not.…
