That in itself showed me that the women in the organization are people that I could see myself being around for the rest of my life. They exemplified the kind of sisterhood that I would want to be affiliated with.…

Engaging with other students is inevitable and getting involved on campus is the greatest way to learn experientially. Mentioned earlier, students that attend Minerva travel yearly, which sounds exciting, but there is not any communication between other students that attend Minerva as well. “Traveling internationally does exhibit an experience that colleges and universities cannot compare to, but that still does not allow students to get engaged with their colleagues in the community around them” (LaFlore 2). Another aspect of college is to network and for students to familiarize themselves with their home, for example, “I am glad traditional college campuses have dorms because that is a way for me to interact with people in the same year as me and I can befriend my roommate and suitemates. Usually, there are floor meetings that allow students to introduce themselves to their peers and that is a great way to interact with the community” (LaFlore 2).…

Ancient Greece can be traced back to the Stone Age hunters (6000-2900 B.C.); however, Greek culture was much more notable from 1100-146 B.C., and likely had a more profound impact on Western civilization than any other culture. From 1100-750 B.C., a period known as the Dark Ages, Ancient Greece was immersed with wars and invasions and, over time, was divided into small, city states. During the Archaic Period (750-500 B.C.), art, the beginnings of democracy, and the knowledge and understanding of the written language started to re-emerge. The Greeks fought the Persians during the Classical Period (500-336 B.C.) and Athens reached its greatest political and cultural heights, including full development of a democratic plan of government (Document…

After conducting my interviews, I was not surprised at the results that I gathered. Almost all of my participants were united on their positionality towards Greek Life and could agree, to some extent, that Greek Life does receive an unfair amount of negative publicity in the media. In order to come to the conclusion that the Greek community receives a lot of negative publicity, I needed evidence from both my interviews and external sources. I was able to gather opinions from each of my participants and each one of them agreed with this statement.…

Attending Buena Vista University it seems as if everyone plays a sport, the small campus and even smaller student body creates an environment that puts an emphasis on athletics. In my three years attending Buena Vista, I have had two different roommates, both athletes themselves. Living with athletes creates challenges and opportunities that are special to athletes. For a washed up high school athlete getting the chance to live vicariously through some of my best friends at the collegiate level is an experience like non-other. One of the biggest concerns when first heading off to college is will you be able to make friends.…

When transitioning to UGA as a freshman, I had tons of questions about the campus and things to do in Athens and didn’t know who to ask. I know I would have benefited from the Peer mentor program and wish it was available when I was a freshman. I want to be a peer mentor because I want to ease the often scary transition from high school to college for a new freshman. When I was a freshman, I spent most of my time either in class, at the dining hall, or in my dorm. I didn’t branch out because I didn’t know what else there was to do on weekends besides football games and I ended up going home most weekends.…

This summer, I went on a mission trip to Greece, where I worked with Syrian refugees. Working within a community of muslims, began to spark a passion in me for this people group and their beliefs. Near the end of the trip, I began to realize that I knew nothing about the Islam religion besides what I had seen in the news here in the United States; which the majority of the time is not a true spotlight into their culture or religion. What we hear on the news can be very misleading, and brings about stereotypes in our country because it is so focused on the negative more than the positive. As one could imagine, coming home from my trip was difficult in many aspects.…
