Attention Craig Groeschel, Senior Pastor of Lifechurch.tv, once said, “In order to reach people no one else is reaching, you are going to have to do things no one else is doing.” I believe the same can be said when it comes to education. Technology makes it easy for students to receive instant gratification from the many games, music, and social media that surrounds them. Unfortunately, the lack of these things to keep students engaged in class often leaves students uninterested in classwork. This can lead to low test scores and, devastatingly, a lack of knowledge for the student. Study after study has shown that people assimilate information better when they are studying information that interests them, rather than things they are forced to learn. If we are interested in something we are going to have a much easier time learning it. Colin Strange, a Toronto math and gym teacher, ran with this idea when he founded the two-week day camp for elementary students designed to make math more fun and understandable through sports and play. "If you try doing these math skills at a table, the kids are good for a moment. But if you add a game and some action to the exercise, they are good for 20 minutes," said Strange. Strange focused on finding a way to hold the attention span of students while helping them to have fun learning at the same time. One activity involved Students hurling soccer balls, then estimating how many meters the ball travelled. The students would then measure their accuracy and adjust their shot accordingly (Brown). Because good quality education is mainly on how well students attain the knowledge, it is important to explore different ways of teaching in order to keep students as engaged and interested as possible. We have to stop doing what all the other schools are doing if we truly want different results. Utilizing the interests of students, creating a discussion-based classroom atmosphere, and exploring educational videos provide educators with more interesting ways to implement learning. While these ideas are often uncommon, they are all ways to work towards exceeding twenty-first century learning expectations.
