The first discoveries of gold in Australia were made before 1850. After 1851 Edward Harves discovers gold at Ophir, near Orange Miner rush to the goldfields in New South Wales and Victoria. Licence fees of 30 shilling a month are imposed. In 1854 miners rally against the licencing system, resulting in the Eureka Stockade 28 men are killed. In 1855 The “ Miner Right “ replace the miners license in Victoria. It costs 1 shilling each year and provides miners with the right to vote. An export duty is placed on gold instead, over 10000 Chinese miners arrive in Melbourne, Gold is discovered at Halls Creek, Western Australia. In 1860-1861 one fifth of adult men in Victoria are Chinese, and Chinese miners are attacked by white miners during the Lambing Flat riots at Burrangong, New South Wales.
