The first chapter in Writing About Writing is based on challenging and exploring the writer’s conceptions about writing, reading, and research. My ideas about writing before reading this chapter were different from what I realized now. When I was younger writing was always one of my favorite subject. However, as I grew up I felt like my work has never been proficient, and sharing my writing made me vulnerable. I hated how my work was graded. Most of all I disliked the lack of feedback I usually received. This feedback left me unable to progress my skills and has hindered me. Writing and speech go hand in hand, but both have their differences, which is what makes writing also an art form. It is an art form in the way writers chose their words, what sentences those form, and what paragraphs they make. There are many forms or genres of writing, including poems, research papers, blogs, articles; the list is extensive, as this art form is widely used and very important. “Writing is not just what you say (content) but also how you say something (form), how you come up with your ideas(invention), how you go through the act of thinking and writing(process), and whether what you’ve said and how you’ve said it successfully meet the current situation.” (pg. 3). In Painting just as writing you are creating a narrative. Painters focus of key points they want your viewers to see using the rule of thirds just as a writer would using a thesis statement. Writers use organization, and decisive decision making to craft their narrative. As stated in the book writing about writing, people have motives, writing is objective based meaning that there is always a purpose as to why the author wrote the piece. A reader chooses to read something, looking to get something out of it. A writer writes something looking for the reader to take something out of it. I like reading because I am often learning while doing so; not just in the conventional sense of reading out of a textbook, but while reading novels I am learning about writing itself. I am not confident in my writing, and this is part of the reason I like to read. As a reader, I can stand passively by in a sort of safe zone where I feel more free to learn. Reading others work is one thing, but writing your own is completely another. Reading is understanding writing, and understanding the meaning that the author is trying to convey. Research and writing are both objective based. Research is discovery and learning, which is how I view writing. Usually research is conducted by observation, lots of observation. For the information to be deemed credible it must be from a reliable source, scientific, direct and conclusive. It also helps if the research is Specific. Interestingly enough, these research guidelines apply very nicely to writing. Research online about things that fascinated me drove to me read more. Ultimately since these subjects are all interwoven, I became a more proficient writer because of
